Lord Bauer had waited patiently for the wedding of Michael and Nikita to take place. One quality of his which worked to his advantage is that he could remain patient through anything. He had to map out the perfect moment to strike. He would let them enjoy their pitiful marriage for a bit and then the chess game would commence.
His first matter of business had been gathering his allies in secret meetings to prepare a strong defense. He wanted Rosemond Hall and the surrounding county. Paul and Madeline would not be able to withstand an assault. On the other hand, Michael Samuelle would not be able to lay claim to the lands unless Nikita gave him a son. Bauer had plans for how to infiltrate the Samuelle estate in order to start to corrupt the marriage. If he could manage to ruin their marriage, Michael would not be there to defend his wife’s land. It would be Bauer’s for the taking. Also, if he could prevent or sabotage the Samuelle marriage, a male heir most likely would not be a threat. If Michael has no son with Nikita, it makes it easier for Bauer to lay claim to the Wolfe estates and the rest of Sussex County.
Jurgen knocked on the door and announced his entrance. Bauer turned and smiled at him. “My boy, welcome back. How were your adventures in London? I hope that you have some news.”
Jurgen poured himself a drink and smiled at his mentor. “Actually, it was quite productive. You are definitely feared among many in the city. They have heard word of you gathering allies, but they do not know the purpose. Some speculate it is to take the crown and others say you are doing it only to exude power and intimidation.”
“Excellent.” Bauer replied in haste.
Jurgen stared at him confused. “Why on earth would you want them to know of our gathering allies?”
He grabbed Jurgen by the shoulders and whispered, “Because while those idiots whom we call royalty and court are worrying about our army gathering, it will distract them from our other plans. We do not only fight wars through weapons”
Jurgen turned around to him and asked, “So we are ready to start our as you call it other form of warfare? It is dangerous in my opinion.”
“Let me tell you something, my boy. You cannot wage a war by armies and weapons only. By fighting others you need to weaken them by attacking what means most to them. Now, my first objective is to gain control of the Wolfe estates. With that, I can muster up an army and take the crown within a year. No one will be able to withstand.” Bauer explained his plan thoroughly. “I have explained this in thorough detail to you before. You know what must be done. This pitiful island of a country has a mouse for a king. We need a lion and I will be a king that the rest of Europe fears and respects.”
Jurgen nodded and said, “It is well thought out, but are you not forgetting the Samuelle family. They are closely tied to the royal family and have many allies themselves. Michael has no weaknesses. I was only able to get to him once through that girl. Ever since then, I have heard he has no feelings for anyone. It is said he will never allow a woman to be a weakness again,”
Bauer stood in front of Jurgen and smiled evily. “You see, I have heard some different news that our dearly strong friend Michael has fallen in love with his wife. She is innocent, naïve and pure. He has made it easier for us to crush him. If the rumors are true, he has a weakness that you must exploit.”
Jurgen listened intently, “It is always a pleasure to take Michael’s women. Go on.”
“You will station yourself in a small estate in the county where Michael and Nikita are living. You must come up with a false name. You cannot allow him to see you. He leaves once a month for London in order to conduct business with the King. This will allow you the opportunity to become ‘close’ with the lady of East Gate Hall. As time passes, Michael will hear word of his beloved wife spending time with another man.”
Jurgen asked, “I understand where you are going with this. How am I to meet her? That estate is massive and who knows if she ever leaves the grounds.”
Bauer answered. “Use your head, boy. You know what you have to do. Eventually as this all plays out and Michael suspects his wife of adultery, he will leave her and not defend her parents when I attack. Also, if by some chance she becomes with child, it will create doubt as to paternity.”
Jurgen agreed, “I usually do not have a problem getting women into bed. I will leave at once. But what about Michael?”
Bauer said, “Do not worry for your dear friend. He will have plenty of distraction when he makes his visits to London. I have arranged for him to meet with an old acquaintance. Also, I have an audience this coming week with his former lover, Lady Lisa Fanning. You take care of his wife and I will take care of him.”
Jurgen excused himself to go pack and depart. Bauer looked out the window and sipped his whiskey. “Paul Wolfe. I am going to crush your daughter’s world and then I will crush you.”
