He was contented with this image, was certain that she would find such sense. Whatever her mother's immense failings, the woman had been determined. Once she saw the path that she should take, she would finally come to him for help.

He was looking forward to such a day, tried to settle himself on it. If she didn't, he had no idea of what he would do. The thought of that idiot Michael returning home to raise a child with her--the thought of yet another generation lost to such iniquity--was one he simply couldn't withstand. He had to know that his grandchild, at least, would be given an opportunity to flourish.

It was this image he focused on, as he leaned back in his chair, beginning to seal up the letter in its envelope; he was almost smiling. He knew of a man who could take care of the girl, after all, one who was right for her: Dorian Enquist. His name might be a bit exotic, but he was purely American, would suit her well. Besides, with her own, less-than-typical first name, they would sound quite right together. It was perfect. All he had to do was convince her.

He had no real doubts about his abilities to do so, saw his daughter--saw all women--as extremely malleable, at their core. That Adrian disproved this fact so thoroughly was one of her many failings in his eyes. No woman should ever be able to go up against a man and hold her own.

It was this terrible crime against femininity which the older actress was guilty of, but such treason against her sex would, fortunately, not be reflected in the rest. Girls such as Nikita held their own for awhile, which most men found appealing enough, but she would break quite fetchingly when the time came. She already had once; the smile deepened. And that was all the knowledge he needed to settle him now.

He was calm once more, unlike when he had written the letter, but he felt no remorse for its contents. The female sex needed to have men around to keep them in line--and a little anger, well used, was always energy very well spent.

His mind went back to his daughter's former breakdown, to the time when Hillinger had been foolish enough to try to take her for his own. True, he had allowed the entire scenario, had had hopes of seeing Michael kill for her--it would have made the actor slightly less of the milksop Lothario he otherwise specialized in being--but the origins of the encounter had not been of his making. Still, it had all been instructive enough. While his daughter had, apparently, made it through the entire experience with a steely enough manner, she had fallen apart quite quickly after it. If Michael hadn't been there to take her to the hospital, she might well have died of shock; his heart saddened. He only wished he didn't half believe that they might all have been better off, if she had.

He hated this truth, tried to deny it, but he had never indulged in such avoidance for long. Still, it had been during her stay in the hospital that the world had discovered her pregnancy; one hand clenched the chair's arm, trying to remain in control. And the fact that that bastard Michael had managed to knock her up only made his constant fury against him that much worse.

He tried to calm himself, knew he needed to--but it was very difficult to listen to such reason. Of course, it had always been clear that the man was more than capable of it. What with one bastard child already in the world, and another prevented from entry only by the death of its mother, the actor's record was clear. From the time he had first seduced Nikita, such a fate had always been a very present danger to her.

The efforts to calm himself were less than successful, but he continued them, trying to focus on the future. The child's presence would not dissuade him. Enquist was a man of the world, understood how marriage should work. His own status would be elevated by proximity to Nikita; that he would take care of Michael's child would soften his public image. And Enquist was quite focused on image, wanted the world to take him seriously. If it did--if Hollywood did--then his status within this profession of theirs would only be on the rise.

Nikita was the missing factor to all of this, Jones knew--and he alone would provide it. Already the man was trying to endear himself elsewhere but without much sustainable success. None of the bigger stars were taking the bait. But, if the businessman could provide it, instead . . .

He was smiling once more, his rage evaporating. Enquist was coming up the ranks quite quickly, would soon be quite powerful. If Jones made his connection to him now, the future of his own portion of the organization would only flourish further; the smile was now permanent. And a successor such as this would be worthy of any price.

It was here where his hopes were fixed, even his thoughts of his own son quite easily dismissed. Jamie had been a problem for sometime, would need disposing of someday soon. This was simply another way toward success.

This was a perfect plan--although not one he had yet presented to Enquist. He needed to work Nikita in a little closer, needed to see her approaching the point where he could trust in her submission. Until she gave up her perverse desire for Michael, such capitulation would be very long in coming. This, then, was where he would focus.

He was still pondering, hoping that the letter would work, when a new plan came to him; the smile was nearly warm. Perhaps even the foolish Madeline would be useful this time. The real head of Premier wanted Nikita away from Michael at any costs, would undoubtedly kill her, if she could find any workable way; he already knew about her plans for the stupid child. This might well appeal to her. If he could assure that Nikita would abandon Michael, Premier would have their opportunity to let her go--and then Jones could find her a place at a more amenable studio. What might happen to Samuelle in his war work after this interested him not at all; Madeline could see to his safety, if she so desired. Yes. He almost laughed. All he had to do was present the bargain--and wait until she snapped at the lure.

The laugh did emerge now, his future much more bearable in this vision--his certainties growing. Soon, Nikita would read his letter, his well-placed attacks sinking into her previously-ignored conscience, making her find some necessary--and long-overdue--doubt. Between her isolation and distance from Michael, the pressures of Madeline and the studio, the dangers to her child, and the eminent charm of Mr. Enquist, she would finally come to see her place. And then she would learn to be useful, for the first time in her life.

Extra note: Dorian Enquist was the memorable SOTW who held Madeline captive in "Mandatory Refusal."
