Chapter 5

Brianna stood in the Perch and looked down on the nucleus of Section One. A mission was returning from Istanbul and they had failed to reach the end game. Another mission was going out to Madrid to try to recover the nerve gas canisters that the sloppy American’s had ‘lost’ in a poorly planned logistical debacle. Comm was currently running twelve missions, prepping for three more and synthesizing data from another eleven.

She was fully briefed on every statistic needed for the call that she was to take soon from Oversight. But she did not have the one piece of information that she knew they would demand. She did not have a functional Operations, and failure was never an option in Section. Simon Johansson, while the absolute best in his field had been unable to reach the unresponsive Operations and Brianna was growing more and more concerned about the ramifications of that failure.

“Ma’am?” Jason voice broke through the silence of the Perch.

“Yes.”

“Oversight is on line.”

“Thank you Jason.”

She took a deep breath, straightened her jacket and turned toward the monitor, “Hello, Raymond.”

“Brianna. How is Section One?”

“We’re holding our numbers.”

“Of course. I see that Istanbul did not go well.”

“Adams missed his target on second target.”

“Recommendation?”

“Cancellation.”

“He’s level four. We have a lot of resources invested in him. Don’t you think you should think about this?”

“No. No, I don’t. It’s the second time in three missions that there has been an incident directly related to Adams. He needs to be removed from play.”

“Excellent. I agree.”

Another deep breath, and then she continued on with the briefing. Although most of the time she really considered it to be grilling, but never said that out loud.

“There is just one other item Brianna. How is she?”

The question she had been dreading, “There has no change in status.”

“Unfortunate. We had expected better news.”

“Dr. Johansson has assured me that he will be able to reach her.”

“Well, yes. While you may find Dr. Johansson’s words of comfort we do not. The data that she holds is invaluable to us and we must have it. Has there been any progress in locating the data in Operations’s files?”

“No Sir.”

“You don’t bring me good news.”

“There is one thing that I have done that may get you what you need.”

“I don’t care for any games Brianna. You have been placed temporarily in charge, and getting someone to replace you is an acceptable alternative.”

“I found Michael Samuelle. He’s coming in.”

“Michael Samuelle’s status is black and unknown.”

“No sir. Operations has known where he has been, every step he has taken. She’s had him under surveillance for years.”

Brianna was amazed as Raymond sighed and then held a side conversation with someone that was in the background but off screen. She had never seen him do anything like that before. “You said he’s coming in?”

“Yes. I sent a representative to retrieve him.”

“A representative?”

“Walter.”

“His classification is retired.”

“I had him called back. Based on Michael’s profile, there was no one else that he would listen to and we are running out of time.”

Her second moment of amazement came next when Raymond actually smiled for a moment, “I’m sure Walter appreciated being pulled out of Ocho Rios.”

“He understood the importance of the request.”

“Of course he did. He always had an ‘attachment’ to Nikita.”

“That was what made him the ideal choice for optimal POS with Michael.”

“When do you expect him?”

“Within ten hours now, sir.”

“You believe that he can aid our situation?”

“He is the only one that can.”

“She must be brought back. I don’t care what it takes. Her talents are pivotal for our organization. For now, the success rate for One will be kept at the lower acceptable rate until Operations is back in charge. Section Two and Three are picking up the extra missions, but this cannot continue Brianna. Do you understand?”

“Yes sir, I do.”
