He was just thinking through the future which he was convinced was all set--any possible obstacle easy enough to overcome, most of them already disposed of--when he heard the footsteps of his longtime gopher. He smiled, Anna coming to see him promptly, as always; he gave her a lopsided smile, glad to have a bitch who knew how to trot, when he called her. Here was a whore who had long ago learned her place.
The woman he was convinced was so thoroughly docile returned to him, nodding--but, as was almost always true in his world, things weren't as they appeared. She had already made plans with the couple the producer was currently trying to intimidate, only needed a few more items, before their plans could go through; her heart quailed, although nothing showed in her look. All she had to do was survive, until they managed to get there.
Despite her hopes, she had to fight back her sense of illness at seeing the man--Bauer needing a really good shower and about a month without booze before his presence was merely disgusting. Still, even that wouldn't resign her to being around him, her knowledge of all he had done far too deep; she managed to keep the hate out of her eyes--knowing it would only arouse him. She had to remain as bland as possible, if she hoped to avoid the fate of so many women before.
She did, as usual--this technique the major reason she was still untouched by her current master. Bauer liked them young--really young--and preferably visibly scared. A woman who responded to even the worst sort of insults with absolute indifference wasn't his type. His sadism always needed a much bigger fix than that.
He barely noticed her, then--at least sexually--saw her as a walking piece of furniture. But she was a useful one. "What'd they say?" he wondered, almost smiling, knowing what she was setting up for him. He couldn't wait to have that pompous asshole, Volker, and his little sodomite as his own.
Anna only blinked, appearing totally uncaring--even if her thoughts were very different. The producer was probably convinced that he seemed absolutely calm and refined--but he actually just sounded like a Bowery bum, his question coming out something like, "Wasshdezey?" Still, she was used to him, had her lies all ready. All she had to do was try to stomach being a silent accomplice to his crimes for a little while longer.
It was this complacency which was proving to be a problem for her, his most recent crime almost unendurable--even if it mirrored so many others before. Nothing showed, as she answered. "They finally agreed to a payment but haven't settled on an amount." It was the stalling tactic they had all settled on, the time needed to make certain their plans. They would keep promising to pay him off, never settling on the amount, supposedly only wasting what time they could before giving in sexually--knowing that Bauer's sadism would enjoy stringing them along for as long as possible--while they waited to gain the last few things they needed. Still, when the producer seemed too out of it to answer, she went on. "$10,000 would probably be the offer."
The question was really supposed to be his line, but her current master was too drunk to even sit up straight, certainly wasn't coherent enough to meet his cues. He nodded awkwardly. "It's not enough." It sounded more like "Snawnuf," but she was used to translating. "Make it 50."
"I'll tell them."
She turned to go, but he stopped her--as she had *prayed* he would; apparently, some part of his brain was still working. "Not yet. Let them wait." He was grinning, as she turned back to him. "Besides, we don't want anyone to see you going there too much." Anyone who knew her knew that she rarely went anywhere by her own choice alone.
All of this had pretty much come out as a nearly-untranslatable mush, but she got the gist of it, nodding--no relief shown. "Of course," she murmured, realizing that she could finally go--thanking God, as she remembered her plans. If any of this worked out, if she weren't damned to Hell long before it by one of Bauer or Formitz's "mistakes," she was going to find the most cloistered convent in history. If even a priest came by, she would probably scream; she managed not to clench her fist. She never wanted to see another man again.
This didn't really apply to her ex-husband, but there had never been any use of dreaming about Rene. He couldn't want her, and he was taken; she would have sighed, had she been alone. All she could hope was to work off at least a couple of minutes of purgatory with the rest of her life in the church.
She had almost made her escape, when the poor, unfortunate girl for the night arrived--and Anna's heart nearly stopped, remembering what had so recently happened to Sondra, and so many others. She was still surprised, given what she had been able to piece together later, that Formitz had agreed to take the girl, once she was dead; he usually liked his victims more lively than that. She managed not to think about this, hearing Bauer garble something, and whispered, "Get him a drink," to the girl, before she left. It was not only what he had said, it was good advice. If he were really out of it, he might find himself incapacitated--in any number of ways--before his newest victim had too much experience with Hell to ever try to forget.
She left them there behind her, the last sound discernable the lowering of a zipper, and closed her eyes, trying desperately not to be ill. She had endured many things in this existence of hers, but none of them came close to the experiences of any woman unfortunate enough to get near Bauer; she sighed, going to her room--knowing there was nothing she could do, just yet. It was Christmas Eve, and she was in the devil's house. She could only hope fervently that she could forget the fact that there was another woman in this place whose Christmas Eve would prove far worse than that of a woman who once had been happy at the good-fortune of giving birth in a stable.
