Chapter 32
Michael had checked on her multiple times but Nikita continued to sleep and he assumed that she must need the rest but he was worried. He spent the time looking at the houses that had been waiting as promised on his laptop. They were very beautiful, but he had a good idea just what would work for Nikita. It couldn’t be anything too fancy or pretentious as she just wasn’t that kind of woman at all. That ruled out all the mansions and the city apartments that Mick had sent.
What did catch Michael’s eye were the cottages, especially the ones with small gardens. He knew how Nikita loved color. He thought back to the first night that she had allowed him into her apartment and the kaleidoscope of colors that had made up her tiny spot in the world. He wanted her to be surrounded by those rainbows of soft colors. But he didn’t want the grounds to be too large, he knew that she would want to take of them herself and he wanted something very manageable for her to do so.
The house itself needed to be just perfect. He knew it needed to be just the right size, too large and it would overwhelm her, too small and she would feel confined. He wanted it to have more than one floor, they both needed their space. She had to have time alone to recharge and to think, but he didn’t want her too far away from his side.
It was hard enough right now just to have her in the other room, a part of him just wanted to make sure that she was breathing at every second. He had come so close to losing her so many times, and his heart still ached every time he thought about it. He simply couldn’t live, didn’t want to live, without her anymore at all.
He had a ridiculous notion in his head to just wrap her in the softest down and hold her for a few weeks until she was returned to the healthy vibrant woman that he met on that first day back at Central One so long ago. Her eyes had sparkled then and her curves had enticed him in a way that no other woman ever had. He wanted that woman back, felt a primal need to make sure that she was returned to that prior state and nothing ever hurt her again.
He tried to refocus his thoughts back to the task at hand, finding homes that Nikita could look at, he didn’t want there to be too many. He was hoping that they could leave here in a couple days, but to do that meant that they had to have a place to go to that was fully functional for them, Nikita was not up to shopping and furnishing anything right now. He changed his search parameters to furnished temporary apartments that would be available immediately.
A while later, he had found the perfect temporary apartment for them and sent a message to Mick to please take of the arrangements for their departure from Center. He was just getting up to check on her again when there was a notification that someone wanted to see him.
Michael checked the monitor and let the doctor into their quarters after verification of his identity.
“Michael, Mick said that you wished to discuss Nikita’s medication.”
“Yes, please sit down.”
“I can’t tell you exactly what any side effects might be. Our testing was understandably limited to a very small case study. After that we have made minor modifications in compounds if there were affects in Alexandria’s physiology.”
“What side effects are you aware of?”
“There were severe headaches in early trials. Also noted was low blood pressure, intolerance to cold, weight loss and in one case internal bleeding centralized to the liver.”
“Nikita is sleeping a lot.”
“Yes, I was informed by Mick of her weakness. I can’t tell you if it is her body getting used to the medicine or if it is because of the disease. Alexandria took to the meds very quickly and her rebound time was extremely fast.”
“I read the files. Nikita has been through a lot, perhaps this is just her body healing from the traumas?”
“Perhaps.” The doctor took in the powerful man that sat before him and wondered once again if he should tell Michael all of the truth, as if that was even an option available to him. He seemed terribly concerned for Nikita and as much as the doctor wanted to reassure him that all would be well, he couldn’t really say that with 100% accuracy.
“Do I have all of the data that you have on the case studies that were done?”
The doctor put on his best “Section” face and lied while looking directly into Michael’s eyes, “Yes.”
Michael tried to read the man in front of him, but he was good at hiding his thoughts. Michael desperately wanted to believe that he had all the information, for Nikita’s sake. Trying to protect this woman was going to drive him mad, it was like the God’s were against him in his efforts, but he had to try.
Michael still hesitated as he studied the doctor sitting across from him. Something wasn’t quite right, it was in his eyes. Michael would have to continue to search the systems. “It’s my understanding that the meds will be shipped to a drop point.”
“That’s correct. We will need feedback from you on her condition on a regular basis.”
“I know. I have already asked Mick to set up a secure channel for that purpose. Doctor, listen to me, Nikita is not to know about the contact that we will have. She is nervous enough about how our situation will be. I won’t have her upset any further. Are we clear on this?”
The doctor nervously shook his head in response. Michael was not a man to cross and the doctor knew it. He cautiously asked, “There are a series of tests ordered for her before you leave. I have them scheduled for tomorrow late morning. Is that all right?”
Michael thought about it for a moment, “If she sleeps well tonight and feels like it in the morning then fine. If not, it may need to be moved back in the day.”
“I understand. Is there anything else?” the nervous doctor asked as he moved toward the door.
“Just one thing. If anything happens to her, I will remember who you are and there is no where that you can hide. Do you understand?”
“Yes…yes, I do…” he stammered.
“You may go.”
Michael took a deep breath after the doctor’s departure and ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Something wasn’t right, he could feel it. But he had no idea what ‘it’ was. He knew that he needed to get Nikita out of here. She would relax and rest better out of this place. He didn’t want her tainted anymore than she already was by this organization.
He needed to see her, needed to feel her. In the bedroom he just watched her for a moment as she slept, so trusting that he would watch over her. He removed his clothing and slipped into bed next to her pulling her into his arms. She murmured softly in her sleep and he gently shushed her while kissing her forehead as she quickly resumed her slumber. He laid her head on his shoulder and pulled the covers around her to help keep her warm.
He closed his eyes for a moment and felt nothing but her soft warmth beside him, listened to just the faint breaths that she took as she slept. He pulled her a little closer needing to literally feel her heartbeat. He would protect her. It was his solemn vow that he made silently to himself as he laid there. Nothing and no one would ever cause her distress or pain again. And heaven help anyone who tried.
