Michael and Brighton finally arrived after their long journey. Michael was beat and just wanted to soak in a tub. Lisa’s words were pounding in his head. She was right in how he had treated women the last few years. He would never allow himself to get too close and he would cut off any connection when there were signs of emotion.
They hopped off of their horses and Michael looked up at the lit windows of his parent’s home in London. Somewhere in this house dwelled his beautiful bride-to-be. He wished desperately to see her, but knew that it would be too difficult to find a stolen moment. Their wedding would be uncomfortable enough and he wanted to spend some time with her before it occurred.
“You coming Michael?” Brighton asked him. Michael nodded and followed his friends up the steps to his home. “Michael, I am going to bathe. Would you join me after for a night cap and cigar in the sitting room?”
Michael nodded yes. He started up the staircase to his bedchamber. Angela whispered to him, “Michael! Over here!”
He turned to see his pretty little sister summoning him from out her bedroom door. He walked over to her and she ushered him in quietly.
He laughed and asked, “Angela, what is this about?”
She threw her arms around him and hugged him, “I am so happy to finally see you again, my brother. I have missed you terribly.”
He hugged his baby sister and stroked her long dark hair. “I missed you too. You must have been busy with your season.”
“I was and it was most invigorating. Michael, I met your new bride-to-be,” She winked at him and enticed him with her words.
He perked up immediately and was eager to hear any piece of news about Nikita. “Well?”
She could see that her teasing was working and said, “I absolutely adore her. She is charming, smart, witty and so beautiful.”
Michael smiled and said, “Yes, I know. I am an extremely lucky man to be so fortunate in my match.”
Angela went over to her brother and looked straight into his eyes. “Michael, do not play your words with me. I am not our mother. That girl is special and she loves you. Do not treat her like a ‘match’”.
Michael widened his eyes, “She said that she loved me?” His heart pounded through his chest.
Angela was so happy to see her brother’s reaction and knew at that moment he loved her as well. “No, she did not have to say it. It is obvious on her face at the mere mention of your name.”
Michael stopped his thinking and put his blank face back on. “Where is she staying?”
Angela replied, “Funny you should ask that. I know where she is and that she will be alone for the next hour. It was my time scheduled with her, but I thought if you would like—“
“Yes.” Michael interrupted rather quickly. He had to see her now. He wanted to see the love and passion in her eyes. Could it be true? Could she love him?
Angela ushered him to follow her through some secret walkways and led him to Nikita’s room.
