Chapter 13

After driving down to Newport Beach for BJ’s Chicago Style Pizza, Michael returned Nikita to her apartment early.

“Get some rest,” Michael told her. “I’m going to go back down to the office and chat with Walter. Call me when Davenport calls.”

Nikita nodded. Michael kissed her lightly, a serious look on his face. H climbed back into his car and watched as Nikita went into her apartment.

Nikita entered her apartment and flopped down onto the couch with a sigh. How could things go from so wonderful to so horrible in such a short time?

Her cell phone rang causing her to jump. She pulled it out of her pocket and noticed that it was her work number calling.

“Hello?” she asked, her voice shaky.

“Hi Nikita, it’s Susan. Are you feeling any better?” the receptionist asked.

“Not really,” Nikita said truthfully, feeling sick to her stomach.

“Well, you better take an aspirin. Wolfe needs you here tomorrow,” Susan informed her.

“Ok, I’ll try to be there,” Nikita lied. There was no way she was going in.

“Great! See you tomorrow,” Susan replied in her perky phone voice.

“Bye,” Nikita said, flipping the phone shut.

She threw the phone onto the coffee table and turned on the TV, not really watching it. Eventually, she decided to take a bath to try and “de-stress.” After relaxing in the tub with some scented candles and a glass of wine, Nikita got out and put on a robe.

She was glad that Carla was conspicuously absent from the apartment. She wasn’t sure what she could say to her roommate, and didn’t want to lie.

After she had worked her way halfway through a little pint of Ben & Jerry’s, Nikita’s cell phone rang.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Ms. Jones?” came the reply.

It was Davenport.

“Yes, this is Nikita,” she answered.

“This is Agent Davenport. I need to go over the mission profile with you,” he said.

“Ok. Go ahead,” she told him.

“Not over the phone,” he replied. “Can I come into your apartment? I’m outside,” he asked.

“You’re here now?!” she exclaimed, glancing toward the windows.

“Yes,” he replied curtly.

Nikita looked down at her robe and said, “Give me a minute.”

“Very well,” Davenport answered, and then cut the connection.

Nikita ran to her bedroom and threw on some sweats and a tee shirt, then pulled the clip out of her hair, shaking it out.

She was just finishing up when the doorbell rang.

She let Agent Davenport in and motioned for him to sit. He handed her a small PDA device

“These are the basics of the mission profile,” he told her, showing her how to view the information. “We are going to fit you with a special camera to wear on Wednesday when you go into work.”

“When I go in? I don’t want to go back there… ever. They called me to come in tomorrow, but I’m not going to show up,” she protested. “Besides, I thought the thing on Wednesday was going to be somewhere else?”

“They called you in?” Davenport asked, suddenly focused.

“Yes, Susan, the receptionist, called me earlier and said Wolfe wanted me to come in tomorrow,” Nikita told him.

“Perfect,” Davenport said smiling. “You can wear the camera tomorrow then. You’ll have a little earpiece so that I can communicate with you, and…”

Nikita cut him off. “But I’m not an agent. Why don’t you send someone else in?”

“I don’t have time to get an agent inside. You have nearly unlimited access. We are going to hit Section One with one team, while B team will eliminate the threat at the virus site,” he explained. “Any information you could gain tomorrow, would be invaluable in both missions. Besides, if they are calling you in specifically for tomorrow, it can only mean they are trying to wrap up any loose ends before Wednesday. You may see or hear something that can be useful.”

Nikita nodded, but she wasn’t happy. She knew Michael wouldn’t like it either.

“We’ll be monitoring you in case something happens. We’ll get you out,” he assured her. “Study this mission profile,” he said, tapping the PDA, “so you are ready. I’ll send my prep team in the morning early to fit you with the camera and ear piece.”

He stood to leave and Nikita stood too.

At the doorway, he turned back. “You are doing a great service, Ms. Jones,” he reassured again.

Nikita shut the door and sighed. Then she picked up her cell phone.
