Chapter 16
Nikita looked at her watch again. Wolfe was late. Dr. Hollingsworth had joined them, as had several of the lab techs. All of the people at the large table looked up as Susan entered the room with a box of donuts.
“Mr. Wolfe said that he would be a few minutes late,” she informed the group. “He said to wait here, so I brought some donuts for you.”
Nikita was getting worried. She had not heard anything on her earpiece since Davenport had shouted for the other agent to shut it off. She had no idea what was going on, and now Wolfe was late. What did that mean?
She looked at her watch again. It was 11:05. She wondered if she could just leave. She was getting a really bad feeling about all of this.
“Uh,” she mumbled, standing up. “I think, since we have to wait, I’ll just run to the bathroom,” she said, not looking at anyone in particular.
“Oh, no,” Susan said, turning back from the door. “Mr. Wolfe made it very clear that everyone was to remain in this room until he came.” She looked sheepish. “He said he didn’t want to track people down when he got here.”
Nikita sat back down. “I need a vacation,” she muttered, drawing a smile from the tech sitting next to her.
The code word did not bring any information flowing into her earpiece however, and Nikita began to become truly worried.

Michael labored up the last of the stairs to the 11th floor and flung open the door to Section One, gas mask already on. He prayed he was still in time.
“Please let Walter find the canister,” he thought, noticing that it was ten minutes past eleven now.
The receptionist was just returning to her desk and screamed when she saw Michael.
“Fire!” Michael screamed at her. “Get out – there’s a fire!”
He hoped that she would act on instinct and not question that he was not dressed as a fireman.
“Oh my god!” Susan screamed, and ran for the door.
Michael hurried down the hallway, shouting.
“Nikita! Nikita!”
He threw open doors to empty offices, finally bursting in on a conference room.
Everyone looked up in alarm as the door slammed open, admitting an agitated man wearing a gas mask.
“Michael!” Nikita cried out in surprise.
“There’s a fire!” Michael repeated, figuring it was the easiest way to clear the room. So far everyone was fine, there was no gas issuing from the vents or wherever the canister had been hidden.
“Everyone out!” he shouted again, and the room turned to pandemonium as everyone rushed toward the door.
Michael pulled Nikita out of the way of the rushing crowd and breathed a sigh of relief into his mask.
“What’s going on?” she shouted above the screams of panic.
“Birkoff watched Section One’s systems erase themselves. Walter and I think that they are going to set off the L-virus here,” Michael said, pulling her out of the conference room as he talked.
“Here, in this building?” Nikita asked, paling.
“Here in this office,” Michael replied. “I think Wolfe was trying to get rid of any ‘loose ends.’”
He caught Nikita’s elbow as her knees buckled slightly.
“Oh my god,” she breathed.
“I think Walter found the device though,” he said hurrying her towards the stairs. “Otherwise, it would have gone off by now.”
