Michael and Nikita danced in unison. Michael studied her face and her beautiful eyes. She made little smiles at him throughout the dance. He actually felt life flowing throughout her and wondered where all of this spirit came from.
After the dance ended, he motioned for her to join him in the foyer. She politely agreed and followed him. Although Nikita was very attractive, he wanted to get a little taste of her character. They found an area where no one was around. Their parents were too busy gossiping about the wedding to notice they had left the room.
She breathed a big sigh as they were away from people. He was a bit concerned and asked her. “Miss Nikita, are you not feeling well?”
She looked at him and said, “Oh I am fine. Just nerves.” He loved hearing her speak. “Please just call me Nikita. We are too be married and the less formal name for me is fine. I just get nervous being around so many people.”
He laughed and nodded, “How do you like the estate?”
Nikita looked at him and did not feel like playing around with questions. “It is quite beautiful. I do miss my home though. The people here are a bit different than what I am used to.”
He was curious as her comment. “In what way?”
She realized she should not talk so much about her opinions. “Sorry, sir. Please ignore me because I often let my thoughts slip out. And one more thing…. I do appreciate you trying to talk with me, but really I will be fine if you would like to go back to the party. I do not want feel like your obligation as I ready do. Please take no offense to that statement.” She knew he was attracted to her, but she wanted him to like her for who she was. All men ever seem to want out of her was to go to bed with her.
The more she spoke, the more he wanted to know. She was not what he expected and wanted to know more. “I want to talk with you.”
She looked at his eyes and smiled a bit. “Why? Because I have a pretty face?”
Michael laughed, “That and you are honestly very entertaining. I enjoy your honesty. I have never met a noblewoman who is as forthright as you are”
“Well, I want to get to know you as well seeing I will be married to you. Sir, I will try my best to be ladylike, but I need you to know I do speak my mind and I cannot change that. I apologize ahead of time.”
Michael admired her for her audacity, honestly, and spirit. She did not act like other noblewomen and spoke her mind. She was not boring at all and found her attitude rather pleasing.
“Do not apologize for you do me no offense with your honestly. I would rather have that in a person than being polite for manner’s sake.”
Nikita liked how he accepted her ways, but hoped it was not an act to make her feel better. She would judge that later. At least if it was an act, she appreciated his effort to pretend.
People were coming out into the foyer and she suggested they get back to the party and guests. He smiled at her and agreed. They danced the rest of the night with their proud parents looking on.
“Lady Madeline,” Adrian called her. “I think they like each other.”
Madeline smiled answered her. “Yes, I agree. I think at the moment they are physically attracted to one another. They need to spend more time together and talk more. It would be nice if they could be friends. It would make the marriage more tolerable.”
The dance ended and Nikita excused herself to go get something to drink. Michael bowed to her and walked towards the balcony to meet up with Smith.
He had a big smile as Michael drew near. “Well Well my friend. You are certainly smitten with her.”
Michael rolled his eyes at him. “How can I not be? Look at her! Don’t get too excited though. I barely know her and need more time with her.”
He slapped Michael on the back. “See Michael. At least you want to spend time with her.”
Michael agreed. “She does not have that wealthy woman attitude. There is a lot of life in her and I just want to hear what she has to say. She is not concerned with titles and riches like most women I meet. She has something ruggish about her. If we could get a long, the marriage part might not be as bad as I anticipated. I dreaded meeting her tonight, but she has turned out to be completely opposite of my prior thoughts. I only wonder if she has any lovers. Any man would fall off the horse at the mere sight of her.”
Smith wanted to say that he had not seen Michael this excited since Simone, but did not want to ruin the moment. He had seen every woman Michael had been with and not one held a candle to this one.
“Michael? May I ask what makes you so drawn to her?” He asked curiously.
Michael saw that she was returning to the dance floor. “Ask me later.”
He ran back to her side and danced with her until the end of the party. Something had awakened in him when she was in his arms. He thought it a mere crush, but it was deeper than that. This woman had awakened a part of himself that he had not felt in so long.
At the end of the night, they bid goodbye to their guests. Michael walked Nikita to the edge of the staircase.
“Thank you Nikita for a wonderful night. I truly did not expect to have a good time. It is hard to believe that you are only seventeen, you act so much older,” Michael complimented her.
She smiled. “Thank you too. I had a good time and I am glad it was not so bad either. See you tomorrow. Goodnight Sir.”
He kissed her hand and as he looked up, they once again stared into each other’s eyes. He held her hand for a long moment and then she snapped back to reality. “Goodnight!” She ran up the stairs.
Michael smiled and looked forward to spending some time alone with her tomorrow.
