Chapter 23
“Michael, where are we?”
“We are at Center. They control Oversight and Section One.”
“Why are we here? What is happening?”
“I’ll tell you what I know. After you were taken out of the room and back to your cell, operatives from Section overtook Marcali Industries, Mick was with them. It would seem that Marcali was working for someone from here at Center. I met her briefly when we first arrived here at Center, her name is Alexandria.”
“I don’t understand and frankly I’m scared.”
“I know. We’ll have to wait and be patient.”
Frederic politely tapped on the door and the trays of food arrived. It took a while for Michael to convince her, but finally both of them ate and then she sat back her with her tea and Michael with coffee.
Mick then also knocked politely this time, before intruding on the couple, “Ok. Well now that we have raised both of your blood sugars to acceptable levels let’s have a chat.”
“Mick, Nikita has been through a lot could we get to the point quickly please?”
“Of course Michael. We need a couple more people to do this correctly.” Mick picked up the phone and asked for ‘them’ to be sent in.
Both Alexandria and Walter entered the room moments later.
Nikita smiled when she saw her friend, “Walter!”
He made no move towards her, merely sat down and replied without his usual enthusiasm, “Hi Sugar.”
She looked at him quizzically, “Walter, what’s wrong?”
Michael took her hand and squeezed it slightly in reassurance; his eyes told her that something wasn’t quite right here, but that it would be all right. He would make sure that she was safe. His look calmed her, centered her, made her remember that as long as she had him she would always be safe, always be loved.
“Nikita, I’m Alexandria, I run Center. May I ask how are you feeling?”
Nikita exchanged a quick glance at Michael and then replied coolly, “I’m fine.”
Alexandria saw the distrust in her daughter’s eyes, saw the intelligence, the pride, the potential. She was finally in the same room with her again after all these years. “I’m glad to hear that. And Michael, nice to see you again.”
Michael merely nodded and remained silent.
“Well I suppose both of you have many questions. It’s taken many years to get to this point and I suppose I should start at the beginning. Nikita, I met your Father thirty five years ago. Phillip was a great man, handsome and highly intelligent, I think I fell in love with him the moment that I first saw him.”
“You knew my father?”
Michael heard the slight waver in Nikita’s voice and it broke his heart.
“Yes. We were very close once, in Belgium. I know Adrian told you about her search for your Mother and that it was never successful. Of course it wasn’t, because I don’t exist. The moment I came into Center, I gave up all my rights to you. It was a terrible choice, but one that I knew had to be made. It truly was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life, giving you up.”
“I met Phillip quite accidentally. It was a college party, and I was part of the entertainment. I was young and desperately needed the money. It kept a roof over my head and food to eat. I didn’t know who he was at the time, didn’t know that he was part of the Wolfe fortune at all, I was just a naïve girl in love. I know his sister Adrian thought I was a tramp, just after his money. But that was never the case. I simply loved him.”
“I tried to take care of you Nikita, wanted nothing more than to keep me with me. But we were so terribly poor and you began to get sick occasionally. The flat we lived in was damp and cold. I did everything I could to keep you, please you need to believe that.”
Alexandria had tears shining in her eyes, but Michael remained wary, there was much more to be told. Nikita’s hand was cold and trembling as Michael held it in his, never breaking contact with her.
“There was some money from someone in the Wolfe family that got us through for a while. But eventually that ran out and I got into trouble with the law, after stealing some things. That was when I had to give you up and I went to jail. I never saw you after that day I turned you over to the authorities. Three days later I was in Section.”
“Why? Why are you telling me this? Why am I here?”
“Because you have a unique set of skills that are genetically a part of who you are. You are a natural born leader, a strategist, a decision maker. I have watched you for years. Your medical skills and tenacity are unprecedented. Then I watched as you took those skills and excelled in the business world like you had been doing it all your life. Don’t you see? There is nothing that you can’t do. You are the perfect candidate, made even more exceptional with Michael at your side.”
“Candidate for what?”
“To replace me, my dear. You and Michael will run Center.”
