Chapter 24

“Wait. Just wait. I don’t understand any of this, one thing at a time. You’re telling me that you are my Mother?”

“Yes Nikita I am.”

“And I’m just supposed to believe that? I’ve never seen you before, I have no idea who you are.”

“I know you don’t. But the events of the past could not be helped. I did what I had to do.”

“Give me up! Throw me away like the trash? Never give me a chance to really have a Mother?”

With a sigh and a tone of almost annoyance Alexandria told her, “Let’s not be dramatic my dear. I had hard choices to make. I made them. I know Adrian told you about George never being able to find me. Of course, no one could find me. I’m just like a Michael. A ghost, we don’t exist anymore. All of us in this room are not like other people. We have special skills. You were born for this. I, of course, had no idea at the time, but I’ve come to understand these things over time. You will do the same.”

“Understand what?”

“That there is a lot of evil in this world Nikita. And it’s up to people like us to hold that evil at bay, to protect the general unsuspecting public. These evil people have no scruples, no rules. We have to work at their level to be able to defeat them.”

Nikita looked helplessly at Michael, implored him with her eyes to please help her. Michael knew that this was a potentially explosive moment and playing it would require very careful maneuvering. “Why does Nikita have to be a part of this?”

“It requires a very balanced approach to running Center. Michael you have a logical calculating mind. You are the best operative that we have ever produced. But you see the world the way that Section has trained you to see it. Nikita does not have the liability. Her perspective is still completely humane. You need that balance.”

Michael knew he was being protective of her but he couldn’t help it, she was his whole world and he wanted her to be safe, “Why does it have to be Nikita?”

“Oh Michael don’t be naive. It doesn’t suite you. You two are like two halves of the same whole. You complement each other to the point that you actually complete each other. Both of you separately are formidable, but together, you are a force to reckon with.”

Michael finally was able to catch Walter’s eye and he took the opportunity, “Why?”

“Aw, Michael. I care about you and Sugar. You know that. But I fell in love with Alexandria years ago. She kept me sane in this insane place. We worked well together, but our time is over. It’s time for us to retire, for the next generation to take the reins.”

Michael was truly shocked, “I have always trusted you. You would do this at the expense of Nikita and I?”

“Michael, life is not fair and you know that. If there was another way then I have thought about it. But there isn’t. When I watched you and Sugar together at the hospital I knew then that I had finally found our way out.”

Nikita was shocked for she too had trusted Walter with her secrets and her heart, “Your way out. That’s all we were to you. A way out?”

“I’m an old man. I’ve done my time here in this place. All we want is a chance to live a small part of our lives away from here.”

A silence fell over the room as all the participants seemed to be processing what was happening around them. Mick was surprisingly quiet sitting at the desk and simply listening. Walter stood with his arm protectively around Alexandria, supporting her and acting as a unified front. Michael wondered if he ever knew Walter at all.

Michael held tightly to Nikita’s hand, a physical contact with her that they both needed. She looked at him and read the anger in his eyes, the hurt and the betrayal that he felt lie under the anger and she could see it. She wanted to comfort him, to hold him. She could feel his physical pain and it cut through her. She was very confused, here was the woman that was her mother, and she was terrifying.

Alexandria moved closer to Nikita, “Nikita please understand. Walter and I have run Center for many years. We make some of the most difficult decisions that you can possibly imagine. But we’ve done our job and we’ve done it well. It’s time for us to rest now. We will pose no threat to you or Michael or the organization as a whole. I have already setup a location and profile so you can maintain a constant level of assurance that we would simply be collateral. All we ask is that we don’t be bothered for the rest of our natural lives, however long that may be.”

“No. What you are asking is that Michael and I give up the rest of our lives.”

“Give up? No. You will make a sacrifice just as I have done for the getter good. But the two of you will be together. You can spend your lives together accomplishing incredible things.”

Now Nikita was mad, “Incredible things? Like getting married surrounded by friends and loved ones? Like finding out for the first time that I’m going to have a child? Like picking out our first home? Like watching my child go to school for the first day? Will I be able to do any of those incredible things? No. I won’t and you know that. My life will be over, it may already be over.” Her last words were said with such an overwhelming sadness, but also like she always knew that her life was leading her to this point. That nothing about her would ever be normal and like everyone else. She had always felt different, never like she really belonged anywhere, now she knew why.

Michael watched the play of emotions over Nikita’s face, knew by her tone of voice that she was going to just acquiesce. He couldn’t allow that to happen. Not to her, not to the one woman that he truly loved with all of his heart. She had to fight.

“Nikita? You don’t belong here. We don’t belong here.”

Her eyes full of tears and deep fear stared back at him, searching for an anchor in the storm that surrounded her, “I don’t know anymore. Maybe I do belong here.”
