Nikita had jogged the 5 miles she was used to running every morning, this time around Michael and Elena’s neighborhood. As she walked into the married couple’s kitchen she was sweating, and trying to mask her overall unhappiness commenting, “Wow, it’s hot out there.”
Elena laughed because it was really not hot at all, au contraire it was fall and the temperature was anything but balmy. Outside the kitchen window the new fallen leaves swirled around the trunk of the evergreen Michael and Adam planted a scant couple of years earlier. The wife was not happy with her husband’s apparent mood shift after his family’s reappearance. Aunt Reba’s death and Sarah’s reemergence had brought turmoil to the even keeled Michael.
He sighed wanting desperately to take the sweaty woman in his arms and show her what heat really felt like. Instead he just handed her a glass of orange juice to cool her off. The couple was communicating without words while glances from their expressive eyes spoke volumes to one another. Michael understood how Nikita felt, understood why Nikita wanted to run, heck he felt the same way, but in addition he was trapped. Perhaps it was time for the blonde to escape and he had to provide her with a way out.
Elena was by the stove cooking a fritata that smelled delicious and she shuddered inexplicably when Sarah and Simone hovered close by. Nikita rolled her eyes at the appearance of her ghostly friends and hoped that she did not divulge her discomfort with this event in front of the married couple. She heard Simone comment about her disheveled appearance and groaned audibly.
Nikita then heard Sarah remark, “Damn that egg dish really looks good, like a magazine picture."
Simone added, “This is one of the things I miss about not being alive.”
Nikita watched her friends interacting with the living although they were invisible and then Sarah asked Simone, “You miss eating?”
Simone answered, “No, I miss cooking for Michael – Nikita, cooking always turned him on.”
Nikita mumbled an unintelligible “Whatever,” and both Elena and Michael looked at the woman questioningly as she further remarked in an attempt to cover up, “I am going to take a quick shower.”
Michael watched silently as she walked passed him and placed the empty glass of juice in front of the man. She took the stairs down to her guest bedroom two at a time and she was followed closely by both Sarah and Simone. Nikita needed to communicate with her friends; she was at her wit's end, especially after seeing the homey picture the Samuelles revealed sitting in Elena’s kitchen having a home cooked breakfast.
She told the ghosts as she peeled off her running gear and entered the shower, “I am about to scream, this is too much for anyone to bare.”
Sarah said, “Then go home, don’t stay here, my brother needs to put an end to this hell you are both living.”
“But my father ordered…” Nikita said excusing Michael’s apparent lack of action as Simone interrupted.
“It is time that Michael grows a back bone and claims the happiness he deserves.”
Michael was standing by the bathroom door listening to a one way conversation, thinking Nikita was talking to herself and he said, “I am sorry Kita, you know your coming here was not my idea.”
He startled Nikita and she angrily asked, “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Elena sent me with fresh towels.”
“And you are such an obedient husband that you came running?”
“You need to put yourself in my place Nee-kee-tah, this is not easy for me either.” With this he turned around and stormed out of the room saying angrily, “Go home Nikita, this is my mission after all.”
-----
Helmut Volkner entered Elena’s impromptu dinner party carrying a fine bottle of wine and some flowers. The handsome man wore his money well and the ghastliness of a good-for-nothing individual even better. Michael didn’t like his neighbor; Elena on the other hand simply adored him. To make matters worse and to add insult to injury, Elena’s sole purpose for having this dinner party was to make a love connection between Nikita/Sarah and the handsome block.
Elena spoke to the quasi nobleman at length in the afternoon and explained that Michael’s long lost sister was visiting and she wanted him to meet her. Elena purposely evaded the topic of Nikita’s sexuality and hoped and prayed the blonde woman wouldn't bring it up. Michael was furious and told his wife that someone’s sexuality was no one’s business and should not be a theme of conversation. The handsome man was at the end of his rope with the female tug of war being played on his behalf.
Elena did not care that her husband thought her take on homosexuality was archaic, she knew she was not a homophobe, the blonde just didn’t look gay. Michael again roared with anger asking her to stop being such a cliché. Michael threatened walking out when Elena remarked that a good f**k would snap Nikita out of her bafflement. The woman’s fear of loosing her husband to the still suspicious blonde was stronger than any other consideration.
Nikita stood in front of a full-length mirror after hanging up the phone with Walter and Belinda who reported on little Sarah. She cried because she missed her baby daughter, perhaps Michael was right and her being there was detrimental to everyone involved. She wore a tight pair of leather jeans and plunging neckline sweater and she purposely put on a pair of high heels that made her super desirable. Touching up her makeup and erasing the tears, she waltzed into the festive living room where Elena sat perched on Michael’s lap as the couple laughed at a Helmut story.
“Wow.” Was all Helmut was able to utter, Nikita did look super hot.
Elena smiled as Nikita, flowing blonde hair loose and wild greeted them all, exchanging glances with an appreciative Michael. Helmut stood chivalrously and welcomed Nikita. Michael’s demeanor changed the moment the woman entered the room; he became morose and combatant towards the totally charming Helmut. It was obvious to Elena that her husband was smitten by his so called sister and again she whispered for Michael’s consideration, “Gay my ass.”
“It is such a pleasure to meet you,” Nikita said as she took a glass of wine and sat next to the handsome neighbor.
“The pleasure is all mine, how long have you been here?” Helmut asked.
The conversation was pleasant, happy and Nikita found the neighbor to be quite delightful and fascinating. He was a well-traveled, well-learned enchanting man who paid attention to the pretty woman and pissed Michael off in a big way. The food divine, the wine intoxicating and Nikita suggested a walk around the neighborhood after dinner. Elena was satisfied with her matchmaking abilities hoping the blonde would move on to Helmut, and Michael was still pissed.
This night there was no quickie for the married couple as Elena continued angering her husband while she gushed repeatedly about the beautiful couple Sarah and Helmut made. Michael gave the woman another sleeping pill so he could stand watch for his sister’s return. A couple of hours passed before Nikita stepped back through the door humming quietly a song from the 50s by The Platters.
“You and Helmut seem to have hit it off.” Michael remarked after she entered her darkened bedroom and found him sitting by the window. “Perhaps it is time I tell you about your new friend.”
“Michael, you are making a fool of yourself. Go to sleep, I am tired.” Nikita stripped slowly, which further agitated the stressed man.
“This man is a lieutenant in Elena father’s concern.” Michael continued.
“And this is supposed to bother me?” Nikita asked as she stood naked in front of Michael and pulled the covers off the bed crawling in. “I too am an Operative, don’t you forget that.”
“Nikita, he is a…” Michael said and she interrupted him.
“…A friend of your wife. I am just doing my job Michael, isn’t that what you are doing as well?”
Michael begged, “Kita please, I can’t stand the thought of you with another man.”
She turned off the lamp next to her bed dismissing Michael, “Well, then do something about it Michael, because I have to do what I have to do.”
Michael once more left the pretty blonde, this time he ordered her, “Go home Nee-kee-tah, baby Sarah needs you.”
Elena’s mother, Sarah and Simone stood silently, invisibly even to Nikita, watching the exchange taking place between the live couple. Elena’s mother sat at the edge of the divan smiling as she commented, “There, didn’t I tell you that you were underestimating Elena, I was right.” With this the ghost disappeared and both Sarah and Simone whispered an earlier quote from Nikita – “Whatever.”
---
The next morning Elena waited patiently for her sister-in-law to come down to the kitchen for breakfast and fill her in on the night’s activities. She was surprised to see from the corner of her eye how an all dressed up Nikita looked ready to go somewhere. Elena could hear the faint honk of a taxi by the front door and Nikita telling the driver that she would be right out. The blonde entered the kitchen area sporting a serious face and addressed both Elena and Michael who sat reading the newspaper.
“I am sorry, but I have to go home. The evening you so carefully planned, just served to make me see that I need to face my problems and not run away from them. We will keep in touch, I don’t want to loose my brother now that I found him.” With this she hugged Michael, she hugged Elena and she gave Adam a great big kiss and solicited a promise that he would come to visit.
When Nikita walked out, Elena continued with her morning routine, as did Adam. Michael on the other hand sat quietly behind the newspaper not saying a word, but keeping his eyes shut. Michael understood the message from Nikita about having found him and not wanting to loose him and he tagged her with a tracker/mike so he could keep tabs on her and communicate with her after her departure. He loved this woman now even more, she was risking her father’s wrath hopefully because she realized that she was a distraction too great for Michael to overcome.
Elena was hopeful that her sister-in-law’s departure would bring the semblance of happiness she enjoyed before she arrived. Adam was hoping that the distracting blonde’s leave would return his father’s attention to him. Michael was relieved, perhaps now he would be able to put an end to the deep blood cover mission without getting Elena or Adam killed.
He understood that he needed to take charge and finish this mission if he hoped for a future with Nikita. Michael realized that Mr. Jones who hated these types of missions had prolonged the only remaining mission of this kind just to test Michael’s abilities as a leader. In the corner of the kitchen stood Chuck and Sarah, they were being witnesses, once more to Michael’s convoluted life.
In the taxi Nikita whispered into the mike the handsome Michael placed on her lapel as he hugged her goodbye, “I have your back my love, your daughter and I will wait for you and Adam’s return home.”
Behind the newspaper in the kitchen of his mission house, a relieved Michael, smiled. Elena served Michael his croissants and coffee as the phone rang. The woman was busy as was the man and the child was asked to answer the phone
Obediently Adam picked up the receiver and shortly announced, “He says it is grandpa, he is coming to see mommy.”
