Dreams in the Dark (208/?)
by Katherine Gilbert

The news was grim, its possible repercussions unbearable. Still, this was the standard for the world, these days, was what one expected every time a newspaper was opened. It would only have been a little easier to know that it wasn't happening in his own life, as well.

Helmut was in his silk dressing gown, his pajamas quite comfortable, the day finally at an end; he was sitting on the edge of his bed now, but his partner's information had destroyed all chances of sleep, his feelings anything but soporific. His light eyes glowed in horror. How any new twists could come at this late point in their story amazed him into temporary speechlessness. But a lack of words wouldn't make any of it go away.

Rene knew this too, his gaze sad and apologetic, as he stayed well across the room from his beloved. It wasn't that he expected any sort of violent reaction from the man--his positioning more an act of guilt. Their shared bedroom had always been a site of love. To bring the sort of perversion he had been informed of tonight into it was far too sacrilegious to bear.

The facts were before him, however, couldn't be wished away; he went on, wishing so desperately he could soothe that terrible look from his partner's face. "We don't know that he'll be involved in it. He might just have heard about it and want to watch . . ."

"Stop." It was a ridiculous attempt, Helmut's fury emerging--soft though his voice was; his hands were twisting over each other, leaving them lined in red in his rage. "You know damn well what Bauer is, what he does to women--to anyone he can get his hands on." His look grew harsher. "Do you think for one minute that, if he knows about this, he isn't already involved?"

The banker's voice had become louder at the end of this accusation, and--even if Rene knew that the anger wasn't really directed at him--it was a little difficult to withstand, the past haunting him suddenly. He had taken a few beatings from a lover once, many years ago, when he himself had been in the final throes of his addiction to heroin, and--even if he had never put himself into such a situation again--the strain of the memories told on him whenever this man he loved grew angry. He was well aware that Helmut would never dream of harming him. It was more that the discovery of their love almost a year ago still seemed such a miracle, such a dream. There were so many times he was certain he would be woken from it in the worst of ways. Especially when the stress of life on all those he loved seemed the greatest, it tended to tell on him a bit.

His partner was watching him, simmering, saw him wince, and felt the anger take a sudden turn inward; his head dropped into his hand, his sigh long. Jesus. As though they didn't have enough enemies in this world. Now he was trying to make his beloved into one as well.

His look was apologetic, loving, as he pulled himself willfully back together--rising, coming toward the man. When he was within a breath of him, his eyes had softened greatly, the words a whisper. "I'm sorry." It wouldn't do either of them any good if they let the world divide them now.

It took a second, but Rene smiled, nodding--coming back from wherever his symbolic fears had taken him. Their gaze held for many, long moments, before Helmut led him back over to the bed, sitting beside him. It was time they took on this problem as one.

They were very close to each other, as they did--drawing strength from their beloved's presence, trying to think things through. It was the banker who spoke first. "What do you think he wants out of this?" He winced, both of them imagining only too well what the producer planned for poor Nikita. He waved his hand dismissively, trying to refocus their minds. "Out of our part in it."

Lord--that was the question of the hour. Or, it would have been, had there not been a thousand other fears to assault them now. Rene stared into the future. "Another visit from you? From both of us?" He shook his head before refocusing on the other man--his insights narrowing further. "Maybe he just wants to see us suffer."

This, really, was the most likely option; it was what aroused Bauer the most. Both of them grimaced, looking away, unable to think into it for long. They would need to focus on other parts of this terrible twist in order to stay sane now.

Still, neither of them questioned how the producer had come to know about their protection of the couple--the point too obvious. Anyone with even a little insight could see that--and Bauer wasn't lacking in such a quality, only in morals. All that was really left was how to proceed.
