As recommended by Nikita, Michael made an appointment with her father to discuss the mission, and because the man was no fool, he immediately understood Michael’s reason for going after Glass Curtain. Although Mr. Jones thought that Michael purpose was revenge for the loss of Simone at the hands of the terrorists, the little excursion he planned would serve Oversight’s objective since there truly was ‘chatter’ about the extremist group’s plans. But in reality, and at this juncture, Michael didn’t need to make up a reason to do as he wished, for it was the Triumvirate’s intention to soon turn over the key of command to the handsome young man and his mission wife.

Jones watched Michael lay the plan before him, “It should really be an in-and-out operation and I would prefer we took care of it instead of Section because from what Intel we have gathered Operations, who is overwhelmed, considers this a nuisance mission.”

Jones sat back on his chair and played with the silver handle of his cane, “And where does Nikita come in to all this?”

At first Michael thought of lying, but then realized he would be a fool if he did, “She insists she would make a better plant than most, given her bête-noir for Bakunin.”

Jones laughed, “In Nikita’s anarchist days, she had a great affection for the man’s philosophy. Your sister Sarah was a great equalizer for Nikita...”

Michel spoke quietly since he was sure that Jones knew more than he was allowing anyone to see, “And Nikita help stabilize Sarah, she brought her the companionship that she so needed; the Dion’s were not as nurturing as my adoptive parents.”

Mr. Jones understood that Michael was testing him, watching out for his reaction as they spoke of a subject that had so far been taboo. Jones decided to come clean with the man, “Adrian would probably kill me for…”

“You don’t have to say a word, I know who my parents are and know what you are planning for Nikita and me. I just wish you wouldn’t have made us…” Mr. Jones, who moved with the aid of his cane, interrupted Michael confession.

“Michael, since we are coming clean and I want you to know that I will deny this conversation ever took place if any part of it leaves this room.” Michael nodded, Jones continued, “Let’s make a deal, go along with me on this blood cover mission and I promise that if when your mother, father and I retire, which should be soon, you continue to need this freedom from my daughter, I will guarantee you will both walk away from it without regrets.”

What was Michael going to do, argue with the man that held his life in his grip? The obedient Operative again nodded his head and continued his debrief reassuring Jones that Nikita would not be in harms way. The men even discussed Simone and her supposed death at the hands of Glass Curtain; Michael assured Jones that he would keep focused and Jones knew the man would keep his daughter safe.

In a corner of Jones’ office Sarah watched in amusement how her brother’s control personality played hide and seek with Nikita’s father desperate-father-hopes. It was indeed a pity that the living did not see life with the clarity that the dead saw its apparent pitfalls, which were all man-made. For those souls that amble waiting for their turn to travel to the light, understand much too late, the ease that humankind evades while dealing with the artificial difficulties lining the road to deliverance. But Sarah was happy, she knew that her brother and best of friends, would eventually find Heaven right here on Earth.
