Chapter 14

“Damn! I am not ready for this.” Nikita complained as she slapped the files down on her desk and threw her pen on top of the mess.

Mick watched her and knew that her anger was justified, “Love, I’ve already taken care of our flights, hotel reservations, and I know everything you need from here at the office. All you need to do is pack our flight leaves in three hours.”

She sat and put her head down in her hands for a moment. When she raised her head and looked at him he was surprised to see tears. Mick hated tears, he could handle many things, but he hated to see her cry.

Nikita couldn’t hold back the tears. She had cried most of the night after Michael had left, and again last night. She had been scared and alone. The message on her PDA this morning from Michael had been short, “I miss you. I love you. Be careful. M.” She had cried again after that.

She missed everything about her old life. She missed being a doctor. She missed the patients, the nurses, the doctors, she missed Carla. That love of medicine was all she had ever known until the day she had met Michael and suddenly the world tilted on its axis and nothing had ever been the same since. But no matter how bad it had gotten at the hospital at least she had been a doctor and had her work and a handful of friends. Here she was surrounded by people that she didn’t know if she could trust them or not. And she was in love with an anti-terrorist operative for an organization that terrified her to her core. Everything seemed so out of control and she couldn’t seem to calm down and think the way that she knew she needed to.

Grey had not helped the situation at all. Ever since he had told her yesterday morning that he had contacted Marcali directly and had the first set of meetings all pre-arranged she had been furious. How dare he do that without talking to her first? She knew that he was the President and Chairman of the board and legally she could not remove him from power even if she wanted to, but she was still the rightful owner of Wolfe Enterprises and she deserved more respect than that. Theirs had always seemingly been a mutually respectful relationship, until recently when he began to change. She had tried to tell him that perhaps there were other companies that they could begin to analyze that may better fit the strategic goals of the organization. But he was short and almost rude with her, he wanted to hear nothing of anything else but what he wanted.

The last thirty-six hours had been a mad scramble for Nikita to feel like she was anywhere close to being able to begin these meetings. And that was just from a business perspective. She had to sit across the table and act like she didn’t know him, that she didn’t love him, that she didn’t need him more than anything else in the world right now. She didn’t know if she could do that. She despised this entire situation and she was just scared, scared like she had never known before. Michael was depending on her and she had to be strong, somehow, she could not disappoint him.

Mick watched his ‘target’, and for the first time since he had entered this life he felt terribly conflicted. He knew what Alexandria was up to, she was boringly predictable these days. He knew that she was using Michael to ensure that the negotiations went just exactly as she wanted. If they didn’t then of course both Michel and Nikita would become acceptable collateral in Alexandria’s seeming quest for world power. Pretending in Nikita’s apartment with Walter and Michael had just been fun. It had been years since Mick had such an opportunity and he ringed every drop of amusement out of it he could.

But now, now he was disturbed. Deeply disturbed. He knew that Alexandria had to be stopped, had known it for some time, but he hadn’t known about Nikita and her role until recently. An unfortunate oversight that now had to remedied. This talented and compassionate young woman should never have been manipulated into the middle of this scenario. Michael, Mick was most sure, could take care of himself. But Nikita was an innocent. She had no training, nothing to fall back on if things would become off-profile. And Mick knew that Nikolai Marcali had no intention of allowing his company, at least peacefully, to be overtaken. No he was far too ruthless for that. So Nikita was being sent into a trap.

Mick wanted to be angry at Grey for sending her, but Grey was just another of Alexandria’s pawns that she moved about as she saw fit. They dared not question her for she literally held their lives in her hands. And in Grey’s case she also kept a watcher on his ex-wife and children, just as extra security that Grey would stay in line.

He was actually quite pleased that he was accompanying her on this trip. It would allow him to watch over things first hand, which is how he preferred to do business. Alexandria may prefer to issue her orders and watch from afar, but she learned long ago that Mick needed to be in the field, part of the profile, watching with his own eyes. What he saw right now was an exhausted, pale, innocent woman. She was stressed, not eating, he knew she had a headache, and she was loosing precious weight that she could not afford. He was very concerned for her.

“Nikita, go on home. Take an hour and rest. Then pack, I’ll pick you up at your apartment in two hours. Have you heard from spy-boy?”

“Shush Mick! Just a short message this morning.”

“Sorry love. Have you told him we are coming?”

“Yes.”

“Good. So go pack and rest. I’ll take care of things here. All will go well.”

She relented and stood up to leave and felt a nauseating wave of dizziness wash over her, she clutched onto the desk to keep herself upright.

Mick immediately noticed her pallor and she was trembling terribly, “Hey. Hey there, Popsicle. You ok?”

She felt terrible, like she couldn’t get enough air or something, she shook her head to try to clear it and that made the spinning room much worse, she sank back down into the chair and tried to take deep breaths. They helped. “I’m ok Mick”, she said weakly as he got water and tried to help.

“You are not ok. You almost fell on your face right here in this office and we are supposed to be on a flight in three hours.”

“Do you think he would let me delay it if I am sick?”

“I don’t think he would allow a delay if you were dead.” He instantly regretted the words as they came out of his mouth and she turned even paler right in front of him.

“It’s ok Mick. You’re right. I have to do this. I think this may just be blood sugar, I haven’t eaten in too long. Is there a juice close?”

“Yeah, sure there is. Just down the hall in the ice box. I’ll be back before you know I’m gone.”

He left and in relief Nikita put her pounding head down on her desk and let the tears fall once again. She really did feel terrible and something was obviously wrong, but there was no time to think about that now at all. She had to get to Hungary, to Michael, to this meeting. She had to get through the next few days of negotiations and then she would figure out why she was feeling this way.
