He had been called in hours earlier under the pretence of preparation for the evening’s meeting. What it really had been was hours of Mr. Marcali explaining the real operation that he ran through Marclai Enterprises. Michael realized with a growing sense of dread that Nikolai had no religious or political reasons for his terrorist support. It was simply a matter of basic human flaws – greed and lust for power. He was a very, very dangerous man and he wanted to keep his company to himself. After hours of discussion Michael could not convince Nikolai that the resources of Wolfe Enterprises would actually help to strengthen his reach in the global community. Nikolai had done his homework well and had been fully briefed on Nikita. Knowing her history he also knew that she was smart, he would not be able to keep his terrorist support organization hidden from her, and he knew that she would never condone his actions. No a merger or takeover were absolutely out of the question. “Understand Michael that I will not accept failure on this. She is to be sent away knowing that there is no chance that this will ever take place.” “I understand. But she had a reputation of being stubborn, and smart, a dangerous combination.” “Yes. Well I have removed much more difficult people than our Ms. Wirth. Say an unfortunate accident on her trip back to Amsterdam? I would hate to see it come to that, I have seen pictures and she is quite a beautiful woman. It would be a shame.” Michael’s heart lurched at the vicious words that he listened to from this pompous scum that he was forced to sit here and listen to. Luckily Michael had spent years learning how to take his true feelings and bury them deep inside so that no matter how hard anyone looked at him they would not be able to determine his thoughts. So as Michael sat in the luxuriously comfortable chair he was reminded once again of how he spent his life split in two. ***** Just a couple hours before Michael was to see Nikita again, this time in Hungary under very different circumstances, he connected to Section and requested Cecelia immediately. He didn’t wait long. “Michael. Report.” “Completed briefing with Marcali. He openly admitted all terrorist funding activities as we suspected. I anticipate that his entire operation is actually thirty percent larger than originally estimated. I will be in the merger discussion to take place in two hours.” She paused a moment, and in that second Michael felt some inner sense become very disturbed. “I have been in touch with Center. They feel that the odds of turning Marcali are zero. His reach into bio-terrorism is much deeper than previously anticipated. With you onsite and you have his confidence, we want you to ensure that the takeover occurs. That will place him in a much more vulnerable position. Then he will be taken out of play, including his entire organization.” “He will be difficult to persuade.” “Center wants this Michael. You know the outcome if you fail.” “Of course.” ***** After he was done with Cecelia he broke the connection and took a deep breath. Then he heard the beep on the PDA. Retrieving it immediately he read, “Nikita not well. I will be with her. We are in route. Mick.” Mick? Why was Mick sending the message. A terrible feeling went through him when he thought about all the things that could go wrong. He keyed in quickly, “How is Nikita? Details.” “Tired. Asleep now. Pale. Not eating.” Michael hung his head over the words that he read and rubbed at the headache starting to form over his eyes. “Take care of her. She has to do this.” “She will.” Michael turned off the display and his worries multiplied by the moment. Tonight was going to be hard. Very, very hard. They had to make this happen or he and Nikita would potentially be acceptable collateral. Michael was also worried because he could not get a hold of Walter. He wasn’t answering his cell and he hadn’t heard from him for three days. But there was nothing that Michael could do about Walter right now. He needed a quick shower and then to prepare for Nikita to arrive. Somehow he had to help her. ***** “How is she?” Alexandria asked through the video. “Asleep.” “Will she be able to do this?” “Yes. Michael is in place.” “Good. It’s all coming together.” “What if Marcali won’t…” “He is of no concern to me. I’ll simply eliminate him as a variable.” Her arrogance is astounding thought Mick. “He’s dangerous and Nikita is not at her best.” “Yes. That’s part of the test.
