I'm not so sure but that some artistic license isn't involved at this point.

I have read several descriptions of each of the various tournament 'sports' - but mostly from modern, SCA-type websites. I also know, from reading about the period, that jousts/tournaments were common and wildly popular, and winners were feted and petted and praised and gossiped about, across Europe.

I do understand that no one sang Queen ballads, and the lyrics "We Will Rock You" did not echo across medieval stadiums. (movie reference, there!)

But - I extrapolated from what I could learn, and from more modern histories of sporting events (boxing, horse racing, animal fighting) that go back to about the mid 1600s, to paint this picture of 300 years earlier. I could be wrong. Just saying. *g*
