Michael and Nikita rose early the next morning and sat perusing the digital print outs of the shots Nikita had taken of the wall housing the meditation room: the secret room where they had detected the Society members. Nikita pointed to a tiny staircase leading up the side of the abbey wall.

“That must be the access route Michael....there’s no other possibility.”

“I agree. Get dressed, we’re going in as soon as the gates open.”

“Are we taking the full complement of gear....ahhh, guns and explosives?”

“Yes.”

Michael and Nikita stood waiting with a large group of tourists at the entrance gate. A security guard checked his watch and opened the heavy iron gateway leading to the abbey; the crowd surged forward, Michael and Nikita mingling with them. As soon as they reached the monastery wall, they darted away from the tourists and hid in the shadows of an alcove. Michael motioned for Nikita to start up the staircase as he stood watch below. Peering from the top of the stairs, Nikita signaled for Michael to follow. As he joined her, Michael pointed to a wooden door at the end of a corridor; Nikita nodded while pulling off the long overcoat she had been wearing; Michael quickly cast off his raincoat and tucked both garments behind a large clay pottery.

Darting towards the door, Michael signaled for Nikita to stand on one side of the door while he pulled out a scanner and pointed the instrument over the door while glancing at his PDA. The room appeared to be empty. Using a lock picking device, Michael gently pushed the door open; Nikita crouched and quietly entered the room, pointing her gun quickly at all corners of the room. Michael darted to the entrance of an adjoining room that contained a large meeting table; he crouched and pointed his gun while Nikita slid into the room doing the same.

Michael whispered into his comm unit. “We’ve gained ingress to the room Adrian....it’s empty. We’ll attempt to wait for a few hours on the chance the members will make an appearance....failing that, we’ll set charges and undertake egress....do you copy?”

“Copy Michael....Reilly has made ready for a quick retreat once you two return to the cottage.”

“Good. I’ll check in every fifteen minutes.”

While Michael had been speaking with Adrian, Nikita had wandered through the meeting room and came to an old wooden desk in a corner of the room. She began going through the contents and pulled out a leather bound ledger; she motioned to Michael.

“Look at this....codes....a series of numbers representing what appears to be undertakings of the Society with dates. Very careless of them leaving this around, wouldn’t you say Michael?”

Michael took the book and nodded. “Yes, but the codes only mean something to those in the know.”

“Should we try to send the information to Adrian via your PDA? Reilly and her can work on attempting to identify what they mean. Even if we eliminate the Society members, let’s not kid ourselves Michael....they probably have many eyes and ears around the globe.”

“True....even if the main body is destroyed....the limbs may still function. Let me attempt to scan the pages and send them.”

Michael began copying the pages and whispered into his comm. “Adrian are you receiving these pages of codes we located?”

“No Michael ....nothing is coming through....perhaps it’s the problem we had the other day.”

“I’m going to try another location.” He began heading for the main doorway, motioning to Nikita to remain. Michael slipped into the corridor, glancing around quickly; he began his attempt to send the coded pages of the book. Suddenly the door slammed shut: Michael attempted to open it and when the lock wouldn’t budge, he thrust his shoulder against the wooden frame.

Inside the main meeting room, a hidden panel swung open and eight men dressed in black combat gear and bearing machine guns burst into the room, grabbing Nikita and shoving her arm into the air as she discharged her weapon into the ceiling. As two men pinned her arms behind her back, she kicked her feet up at two other men, sending them flying backwards onto the floor.
She yelled loudly. “MICHAEL! I’M HIT....THEY’VE......”

Before she could utter another word, a large man hit her viciously in the jaw and stomach; she slumped over, blood oozing from her mouth. As she lost consciousness, she could hear the pounding at the main door - the futile attempts of Michael to gain entry to the secret room.

Michael fired his gun repeatedly at the lock in the heavy door; splinters of wood flew into the air. He kicked savagely at the door frame until the wood gave way; Michael dashed into the room, his gun stabbing at the air as he sought out his target: but the target had vanished. The hidden panel had been replaced, the eight men had left, taking Nikita with them. Michael darted around the room, pounding his fist against the walls, attempting to locate the point at which the men had left. His heart pounded in his chest as he licked the blood from his knuckles. Squatting on the floor, his eyes scanned the room for any sign of where the men had taken his woman. He fought to control his breathing and his rage. Slowly he spoke into his comm unit. “Adrian....we’ve....they have Nikita.....”

“Michael! What? Is she alive? Where are you now?”

“I’m in the meeting room....there must be a hidden escape way....I can’t locate it.”

“Michael, you need to leave immediately....they will kill you too....get out now!”

“Not without Nikita....I will find her and kill them all.”

“Michael, listen to me...leave that room now....leave the abbey....please Michael, you can’t help Nikita if.....if they kill you.”

Michael rose slowly, his eyes darting about the room; he made his way to the door, stepping over the fragments of splintered wood. He slipped into the corridor and darted towards the staircase, pausing long enough to retrieve the raincoat he had worn when they arrived. He quickly made his way to the entrance, fighting against the flow of tourists streaming into the abbey.
