Michael had been moved back to the villa and under Nikita’s direction, placed on the bed in their suite. She had then requested another bed for herself, to be made up in the livingroom. Nikita entered the computer systems room and stood watching as Adrian gave directions on restoring the equipment to previous standard.
“Looks like things are getting back to status,” smiled Nikita.
“Well, fortunately I called in a few favours and had a technician fly in from Vienna....he was able to restore the video and install new keyboards. Fortunately no information was destroyed on any hard drives....Michael had managed to obtain some valuable intel and.....” Adrian motioned to the cleaning staff. “That’s fine....you can go now....you’ve done a good job.”
Nikita suppressed a grin as all the staff but the computer technician left the room. “You’ve slipped into management very well Adrian.”
“Oh....well, maybe I’m exceeding my authority....perhaps I should.....”
“No! Please carry on. Michael will no doubt be delighted to have you take charge.”
“How is he doing....I popped in twice but he was sleeping.”
“Yes, he is still slipping in and out of consciousness but the doctors say that is to be expected.” Nikita flopped onto a chair. “I’m afraid it will take time before Michael is back to normal....well, normal for Michael,” she smiled.
“He does know you, doesn’t he? When you told me what he said I......”
“Yes...just a little Michael humour....once he realized he was back at the villa in our suite, he talked to me....a little...before getting drowsy again. We’ll have to be patient....I know he’ll be alright.”
“I’m so happy you’ve decided to remain here Nikita....with Michael.” Adrian walked to Nikita and patted her arm. “I felt you would look into your heart....and find your way.”
Nikita glanced at the technician working at the main computer consol. “Ahhhh....you haven’t introduced me to your technician Adrian.”
“Oh...I’m sorry.” Adrian took Nikita’s hand and motioned her to the young man working at the consol. “May I introduce you to Justin Bernikoff.”
A young man in his late teens with spiked black hair, a stud in his nose and two ear rings in his left ear, turned and smiled at Nikita. “Hi....nice to meet you....call me Download....hate my real name.”
Nikita shook his hand and smiled. “Thank you for helping us out.”
“No probs....man, this is some incred hardware! This must be your old man’s toy....he the one who got shot, right?”
“Well....yes, my old man does spend an inordinate amount of time on the computer. So tell me....ahhhh, Download....how did you happen to meet Adrian?”
“Would you like me to relay the reason Justin?” smiled Adrian.
“Sure....it’s your world....I just live in it.” He turned and continued working on the computer installation.
“Justin was found guilty of hacking into several secure government sites....but instead of sending him off to prison, MI-6 and Interpol decided to utilize his services....until he did a runner and went underground in Vienna.”
“I see....but how did you track him down, seeing you’ve been....ahhh, incognito for some time Adrian?”
“Justin and I kept in touch....didn’t we young man.”
“Ahhh....yeah, sure....Adrian’s sort of like my family....lookd out for me. If the power boys find me....it’s the hole for me....toss away the key for sure.”
“What were you doing in Vienna Justin....oh, sorry, Download?”
“Pirating music....and dvds....enough to get by.....oh wow....look at this! Like powerhouse systems....look here Adrian....this is state of the art!”
Nikita motioned to Adrian. “We’ll leave you to your work...Download. Adrian, a word, please.” The two women exited the room and stood in the hallway.
“Adrian, do you think he could operate the computer systems....run the programs Michael’s been working on....I mean....well, stay here and work for....you and Michael?”
“I’m certain he would be delighted Nikita. I must admit I was not looking forward to sending him back to the streets and his life in Vienna. I’ll speak to him and lay down some rules....and arrange for a permanent room....one with the best sound proofing as his musical tastes are somewhat bombastic.”
Nikita laughed. “Great. I’ll speak to you later....I need to go check on Michael.”
“Oh....Nikita.....I’m so glad you are staying...I mean to say.......”
“I know Adrian....I know.”

Two days had passed since Michael’s return to the villa. It was late in the evening of the second day, when Nikita returned to the suite. She wandered into the bedroom and stared at the empty bed.
“Michael? You in the bathroom?”
She walked quickly to the open bathroom door and peered in: no one. She raced out into the corridor, looking frantically around. Bolting down the staircase, she began to check all the main floor rooms. Sighing heavily, Nikita strode towards the kitchen and whipped open the door. Michael sat on a stood at the center board; plates of food lay before him. He looked up as Nikita entered and smiled, wiping his mouth on a serviette.
“Michael! You had me worried....what are you doing?”
“Doing? Eating....I’m very hungry....too much sleeping....not enough eating....want some of this chicken....think it’s chicken, tastes like chicken.” He offered her a leg he ripped from the chicken carcass.
Nikita ran her eyes quickly over Michael’s body. He was dressed in white cotton pants and tank top; one arm was in a sling from the wound on his shoulder and a small bandage was wrapped around his head.
“Are you warm enough...I can get you a sweater, or a robe...you shouldn’t stay up too long or catch a draft.”
“I’m tired of sleeping....hummmm....tired-of-sleeping....that sounds ridiculous. I feel much better now....I need to get some exercise.” He reached for a bottle of water and drank thirstily. “That feels better...some food and water....are you sure you don’t want to eat something?”
“No...no, I’m fine.....maybe we should just go back to the suite and....sit, or something.”
“I need some exercise Nikita.....we should go out for a walk.”
“Michael...it’s after midnight and raining....hard...very hard.”
A slow smile crept across Michael’s face. “Hummmmm....hard....yes. Very well, let’s go back to the suite”
Nikita went to help Michael up from the stool but he shook his head and began to return food to the refrigerator.
“Here....I can do that,” exclaimed Nikita.
“I’m not helpless Nikita....I can put food away.”
“Yes...yes, of course you can....I....fine....but I can help.”
After the food was cleared away, the couple walked slowly back to their suite. Closing the door, Nikita stood watching Michael as he walked to the stereo and selected some slow jazz. The music drifted throughout the suite. Nikita strolled to the sofa and laid down.
“Oh, I forgot to mention....Adrian has brought a young computer technician in from Vienna....he should be valuable at working in systems....helping you.”
“Yes, Adrian mentioned him....good. I hope to be back working ....maybe in a week.” Michael walked to a chair across from Nikita. “When are you and I going to talk....we need to Nikita.”
Nikita swung her legs off the sofa and began to pace the room. “Not now Michael....let’s just leave things....take them slow. I don’t want to analyze things, let’s just ....well, enjoy being here....and happy you are getting better.”
As Nikita walked by, Michael reached out with his good arm and grasped Nikita’s. He pulled her towards him and looked up. Nikita placed her hands on Michael’s shoulders. A slow smile spread across his face; Nikita looked puzzled.
“What? I told you I don’t want to start a big discussion about why I’m here....why are you smiling?”
“I’m just happy you are here....and I do still need some exercise.”
Nikita pulled away, smiling. “You do, do you....I guess it’s true...men think about sex every 20 seconds....conscious or unconscious.” She turned so Michael could not see her flushed face.
“Exercise is necessary for a full recovery Nikita....and you said it was raining outside....hard.”
She turned and faced him. “I get the message....but I think you should conserve your energies for getting better.....and....well, when we do have our talk.....things need to change....about our relationship....so it’s not just based on sex alone.”
Michael frowned, his eyes glistening. “I never thought it was....we have something far greater than the physical Nikita....our souls are one.... and when we come together physically.....that is our declaration of love for each other.”
Nikita felt tears forming as she blinked to fight them back. Damn this man.....damn him for always saying the right words.
