The following morning, Michael wandered from the bedroom and stopped to look at Nikita sleeping on the hide-a-bed sofa. Her hair lay tossed across the pillows; an arm stretched over her face. Michael knelt beside Nikita and gently moved strands of hair from her face and moved her arm to her side. She stirred and opened her eyes.

“Ahhhhh....Michael....good morning....arrgggghh.....I think I have a kink in my neck....must have slept funny.”

Michael smiled. “There is a perfectly good bed in the bedroom.....a big bed....you could have one side and I could have the other.....then you won’t hurt your neck.”

“No doubt....but I don’t think you would remain on your side....of the bed that is. I need some time Michael....to process things. How are you feeling this morning?”

“I want to go for a walk with you. I do need to exercise. Let’s have some breakfast then go out.”

“Are you certain...you don’t want to rush things.”

“I feel stronger but need to get rid of some.....ahhh, energy.”

Nikita turned her head and smiled while throwing back the duvet and swinging her legs off the sofabed. “Fine....I’ll have a quick shower and go make us some breakfast. You take your time and dress warmly....and maybe the paramedic should change your bandage.”

Michael watched Nikita as she padded across the floor towards the bedroom bath. Clad only in panties and a t-shirt, she could feel his eyes mentally stripping away the skimpy garments. She turned around at the bedroom entrance. “Would you like to have a bath first....I mean....I can wait and......”

“I would prefer if we both bathed together....but I understand your need for privacy....and time. I’ll bath after we return from our walk.”

“Ohhhh....fine....and....good. I won’t be long.” She turned and disappeared into the bathroom.

Michael inhaled his breath, fighting to dissuade the growing tightness in his groin.

Michael and Nikita walked slowly along the gravel access road; two armed security men followed a discreet distance behind. Nikita squinted into the sun, pulled out her sunglasses and smiled.

“This was a good idea going for a walk....to help get your strength back.”

Michael adjusted his sunglasses and nodded. “Yes....strength back....I suppose that’s what I need. I’ve arranged to meet with Adrian this afternoon to go over our current status. She has some ideas about recruiting new operatives.....we are dangerously low in staff. It was fortunate the attack on the villa was undertaken by enemies of Dalton....if they had been from the Society, they would not have made any mistakes and would have had more men.”

“Mistakes? They killed the security men and broke into computer systems....nearly killed you....I don’t see where they made many mistakes.”

Michael looked over at Nikita and smiled. “Their mistake was not realizing they had to take on a well trained, virulent female agent....with a gun and the discipline to kill.”

“I don’t enjoy killing people Michael....but they were attacking the villa and trying to kill you.”

“I haven’t thanked you for saving my life Nikita.”

“No problem....let’s hope there is no further danger.”

“Unfortunately the Society are our biggest enemy. Once we recruit further personnel, and train them....we can undertake a series of missions to deal with the threat.”

Nikita stopped suddenly and stepped in front of Michael; the security men halted and quickly looked around for any anomalies.

“Why must it be your mission in life to destroy the Society Michael?”

Michael remained silent; he removed his sunglasses and pushed Nikita’s on top of her head. Leaning in he whispered. “They will kill us anywhere, anytime Nikita....we are their number one enemy now. Before the attack, I was able to access intel from their highest sources.....you, me, Adrian....and your Father, are their greatest threat. Do not deceive yourself into believing we will ever be safe anywhere in the world.”

“But all they have done, kidnaping Adrian and I....tracking us....they know where you....we, are. Why don’t they just attack, like Dalton’s enemies....gawd, they could just shoot a missile at the villa and poof, we’d be gone.”

“They don’t know how much information, or where, we have spread intel about who they are and what their agenda is. I’ve been sending complex unix system messages that they are receiving....thinking we are advising important world leaders of the Society’s activities. They are just waiting in the shadows, not undertaking any new illegal activities to bring attention to themselves.”

Nikita pulled her sunglasses back down and started walking. Michael glanced back at the security men and replaced his glasses. He joined Nikita and they walked in silence. Upon reaching the main gate, Michael nodded to the armed gate security men and inspected the replacement gate. Nikita sighed and slipped her arm through Michael’s; they turned and began walking back towards the villa with their guards slowly surveying the perimeter.

“How’s the shoulder feeling?” she forced a smile.

“It’s coming along....could be awhile before I can sit comfortably at the computer though. Possibly Adrian’s technician can perform some tasks for me.”

“He seems like a bright fellow....very impressed with Dalton’s system....or should I say - your system.”

They returned to the villa. Michael stopped at the entrance and reached for Nikita’s hand.

“Let’s go and sit on the cliff overlooking the sea before going in.....I’ve missed our time together....outside.”

“Okay....are you warm enough?”

Michael suppressed a grin. “Yes, thank you.”

Nikita snuggled next to Michael on a large rocky outcrop. He wrapped his good arm around her shoulder and rubbed his cheek against hers. She giggled.

“You didn’t shave.....guess it’s difficult with one arm....want me to help you with that later?”

“I might have to put you in charge of all my body functions.....seeing I only have the use of one good arm.”

“Don’t push it mister....I draw the line at shaving you....” Nikita glanced down at Michael’s waist and fought to pull her eyes away from the bulge in his jeans.

Gulls swooped and cried overhead as the waves crashed onto the beach below. The couple sat in silence, listening to the surf. Nikita leaned closer and whispered in Michael’s ear.

“I missed these moments together too....just you and I....not worrying about what was coming after us.....I constantly think back to our time at the cabin, in the snow. Please Michael, let’s return there....it was such a magical place.”

“I liked it there too....so peaceful. Maybe we can get our own cabin in the mountains....somewhere.”

He pulled her chin up and kissed her gently. Nikita’s heart began to pound as she fought desperately to not give into her feelings of desire. Michael pulled back, his eyes boring into hers. She felt like he could see into her soul. Suddenly Nikita shook her head and started to get up.

“We should head back to the villa Michael.....you said you were to meet with Adrian, right?”

He looked up at her and sighed. “Yes....perhaps I want things to process too quickly....”

“What? You mean between us?”

“Yes Nikita.” He rose and stood before her. “You are my weakness.....and I must learn to read you....to understand your needs. I lost you once, and you said I never had you....but now you are back, and I don’t want to ever lose you again. Please be patient with me Nikita....it is very difficult for me to learn how to understand someone who has captured my heart.”

Nikita turned her head towards the sea so Michael could not see her face; she suddenly felt breathing difficult and a lump in her throat.
