Nikita sat tucked into a rear seat of the private jet Adrian had arranged for their return trip to Portugal. The pilot had managed to keep the plane discreetly hidden at the Bordeaux airport, claiming engine repairs. Nikita had finally contacted Michael through the satellite uplink, advising of their return and the completion of the mission. Reilly had not spoken to her since their departure but now he was making his way towards the rear of the jet. Slipping into the vacate seat next to Nikita, he inhaled his breath.
“Ahhhh....look Nikita...I’m sorry about the innocent but I had direct orders from Michael to eliminate everyone on site....and that I was to do the killing.”
“No need for explanation Reilly...you did your job...as ordered,” she stated dryly.
“Well, you being team leader should have been making all the calls but....I had a second layer command....if you have a problem with that....you need to speak to Michael.”
“I will be...now if you don’t mind...I want to sleep.”
Reilly got up and returned to his seat, musing to himself. This pair....Michael and Nikita...there must be a power struggle between them...with her father the head of Center and Samuelle being an outcast operative. But Samuelle does have more tactical and field experience than her...or maybe it’s something else.....they are lovers afterall.
It was after midnight when their vehicles arrived back at Dalton’s villa. Adrian and Michael stood at the entrance way watching the operatives file in, lugging their equipment with them. Michael nodded quietly at each man as he passed by. Nikita walked by, making no comment, her face stoic. Michael turned and watched as she made her way up the stairs to their suite. Reilly strolled over to Michael after giving the Center agents their orders for tomorrow.
“Mr. Samuelle, would you like me to debrief now or wait until morning?”
“The morning will be fine....good job....express that to your men and also to Dalton’s.”
“Ahhh....I will but it would be better coming from you...especially Dalton’s men....they haven’t totally bought into this business....but that will be outlined in my debrief.”
“Fine....I’ll speak to the men tomorrow. Is there anything else for now?”
“Well....ahhh, Nikita Jones is not....she wasn’t happy with the second layer command you gave me....especially since there was an innocent on site.”
“Yes....well, I’ll deal with her...thank you Reilly....and goodnight.”
Reilly turned and disappeared towards the quarters assigned to the agents. Adrian began to walk with Michael back to computer systems.
“It had to be done Michael and you know Nikita.....we both do, she will never be able to kill an innocent to complete a mission.”
“She should not have gone on this mission....it should have been me.”
“You were not well enough....and still probably are not....you said the headaches were returning...right.”
“Yes, somewhat, but I will be fine......and I realize Nikita was an excellent agent with MI-6 but she didn’t have to kill in cold blood....the task that lies ahead of us will call for many deaths....in cold blood, that’s the only way we can eliminate the society.”
They sat across from each other in systems. “I realize that Michael....but I fear there is more to your concern....you are frightened Nikita will be harmed....and that is understandable. I can see how much the two of you love each other.”
Michael leaned forward, staring at his hands. “I could not live if anything happened to Nikita....I lost her once....I must not again.”
“She has asked to be part of this Michael....and heaven knows we need her expertise....maybe you should trust her to make her own decisions while in the field.”
“You know there must not be any witnesses to our actions Adrian...that means killing all who are involved with each profile.”
“So you did have a second team eliminate Perignon and Raymond Rice?”
“Yes....and Nikita’s suspicions about Rice were well founded....he could be bought by the highest bidder.”
“Does Nikita know they have been disposed of?”
“No...second team were waiting for orders to proceed after the plane departed. Sorry about Rice, I realize he worked for you once, but he was not to be trusted Adrian.”
“Don’t apologize....he served a purpose. What about Perignon?”
“To be found with an overdose of cocaine in the arms of a prostitute.....Rice’s body was disposed of in the river.”
“Hummmm....very efficient....you are a man of action Michael....albeit a ruthless one...but that is what is required. Well, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to retire. May I join you for Reilly’s debrief in the morning?”
Michael watched Adrian disappear through the door; he rose slowly, and stood staring at the computer screens as they filtered intel. Turning, he left systems and made his way upstairs to his and Nikita’s suite.
