Nikita twisted on the bed, she fought to bring her thoughts into consciousness. The para-medic adjusted the IV on her arm and dabbed her forehead with a damp cloth. She felt her body floating in the sea, one large wave after another pushing her to shore. The para-medic whispered in her ear.

“Hey....beautiful...you in there somewhere? Better come back to the present or I’m in deep shit.”

Nikita stirred and slowly opened her eyes. Her whole body felt like a lead weight; the muscles throughout her body ached as she fought to focus on the person leaning over her.

“Who....who are you? Where am I?”

“Thank God! Thought I might lose you....I understand your name is Nikita....that right....Nikita?”

Nikita struggled to sit up but the pain in her body overwhelmed her; she sank back onto the pillow and peered at the man smiling down at her.

“Where am I and what have you done to me?” she whispered.

“You’re on the island of Madeira...you know, off the coast of Portugal. You and the old dame are guests here. You must be important cause they definitely want you alive....I’ve been looking after you.”

“Madeira? Oh....the boat....yes. You drugged me....tried to kill me!”

“Hey...not me. The dudes on the boat did that. Knocked you and the old girl out...gave you a double dose though....stupid mistake, it could have killed you.”

“Where’s Quinn? Declan Quinn....is this the control center for the Medusa Society?”

“Now, now...too many questions. I just perform minor medical miracles...like bringing you back from the dead....you should thank me.”

“Thank you....I guess. What do they want with me?”

“Not sure, but like I said....you must be important to them.”

“Where is Adrian? The older woman who was on the boat...is she alright?”

“She’s in another room....sleeping. She came around and started bad mouthing people so I gave her a mild sedative. She’s a tough old bird.”

“You’re certain she’s alright?”

“Yes...no problem. Look...it’s been great chatting but I should tell Esperanzo you’ve regained consciousness.”

“Esperanzo? Who is he?”

“Oops....not suppose to mention names....he’ll tell you, if he’s inclined. He’s the one wanting you alive. Anyway, excuse me....Nikita.”

The para-medic turned and left the room, leaving Nikita untied on the bed. Once he had left, she forced herself to sit up and swing her legs off the bed. She yanked the IV from her arm. Rising slowly, Nikita staggered to the window overlooking the sea. Sunshine glistened on the Atlantic; huge rolling waves crashed against the boulders below the stone house that sat on a rocky outcrop. Nikita staggered back to the bed; she scooped up her shoes and jammed her swollen feet into them. Scanning the room, she pushed herself from the bed and reached for her fleece jacket that lay on a chair. As she struggled into the jacket, Nikita caught a glimpse of herself in a wall mirror; her hair was tangled and looked like a wild mane. Her eyes were bloodshot and her skin blotched with red swelling.

“Hummmm....real beauty you are Nik. I’ve got to find Adrian and get off this damn island. If they want me alive, the Society has a reason....probably to trap Michael.”

Nikita pulled open the door and peered tentatively into the hallway; no guard or anyone was there. She walked slowly along the passageway, regaining her strength with the knowledge she alone must find Adrian and plan an escape from the island. Nikita tentatively opened a series of doors along the hallway, hoping to find Adrian. She stopped suddenly upon hearing voices approaching on the stairs and darted into the last room before the staircase. Closing the door, she held her breath, as a group of men wandered down the hall. Hearing a low moan coming from an anti-room, she darted inside: Adrian lay moaning softly on a large, canopy bed. Dashing up to the bed, Nikita sat beside the older woman, gently stroking her hand.

“Adrian? Adrian can you hear me...it’s Nikita. Please try to wake up....we must leave this place....Adrian.....”

The older woman stirred and opened her eyes. “Ni...ki...ta? Is that you?”

“Yes...it’s me Adrian....do you think you can walk?”

“Hummmm....well, I feel terribly sleepy...but...I will try.”

Nikita assisted Adrian to her feet. “Please Adrian....we must go....they gave you sleeping pills...but the Society brought us here for a reason....to trap Michael.”

“What? Trap who?”

“Michael....Michael Samuelle....they’ve been hunting Michael and me....remember.”

“Only Michael? Surely they want to destroy more powerful people than Michael Samuelle.”

“What? What are you saying?”

“Yes, indeed Michael Samuelle would prove to be a threat to the Society but I’m certain they want to destroy more people....you know....up the proverbial intelligence food chain,” she laughed.

“Adrian, I think the pills are making you delirious....the Society want to kill Michael...they kept me alive to entice Michael here...I’m certain.”

“Yes my dear, no doubt you are correct. Oh my goodness I do feel a little shaky on my legs. How do you propose to get us away from here?”

“Not sure yet. We’re on Madeira...you ever been there before?”

“Well, yes I have....used to have an old contact here. Where exactly on the island are we?”

“I don’t know that either...but we’re in a large stone house, situated on a point of land jutting out in the sea.”

“Hummmm....interesting. Well, my old contact is in Machico....do you think we’re anywhere need that village.”

Nikita smiled. “I wish I knew Adrian....we may have to liberate one of their vehicles and make our way to this town of Machico....do you think your old contact will help us get off the island?”

“I’m certain he would....if....well, if the man is still alive.”

Nikita grimaced and pulled Adrian towards the doorway; she stood listening for any activity in the hallway and edged the door open. The two woman crept silently down the staircase and headed for the main doorway.
