The old BMW crept along the narrow streets of Machico on the island of Madeira. Nikita glanced at Adrian; the woman’s eyes were heavy with sleep.
“Adrian...please try to stay awake...which house is your contact?”
“What? Oh, sorry my dear...I feel so sleepy...whatever drug they injected must be very strong....ahhhh....try a bit farther down the street. If I remember, there is a small church across from his cottage.”
Nikita steered the car slowly through the narrow street, her eyes darting around. “There! There’s a church...which house....?”
“Hummmmm....I think....maybe the tiny white one just past the church....oh my goodness, it’s been a long time since I’ve been here....any my memory isn’t what is used to be.”
“What about that little white house....does it seem familiar?”
“Well...let’s try...we can but hope,” she smiled.
Nikita pulled the car off the road onto the narrow sidewalk in front of the cottage. “We need to ditch this car as soon as possible....they will be looking for it.”
The two women slipped from the vehicle and walked to the front door. Adrian knocked lightly and upon not hearing a response, began pounding her fist. “Joao....! Are you in there....it’s an old friend....,” shouted Adrian.
Nikita pulled Adrian from the door. “Adrian....shuuush....we don’t want to draw to much attention to ourselves.”
“Yes but Joao is partially deaf....he may be totally deaf by now.”
Nikita knocked on the door, then tried the handle. The door was unlocked; she pushed the door open and peered inside the cottage. “Hello....Joao....are you here....I’m with Adrian Maxwell...may we come in?”
The two women walked into the cottage. The main room was dank and smelled of mildew. Adrian shook her head. “I’m afraid it’s been some time since Joao lived here Nikita...the place appears deserted.”
“Yes....can you think of anywhere else he may be living?”
“Hummmm....living....if he is still alive. Joao had many years of working undercover and hence many knives waiting to end his life.”
The two woman stood staring into each other’s eyes.

Back at the stone house overlooking the sea, Esperanzo paced back and forth before his desk in the main library. He glared at the para-medic who had been attending Nikita.
“You are certain the implant transmitters are working properly? If we lose these two women...the whole operation is in jeopardy!”
“Yes sir....both transmitters were implanted on their upper backs....you know...the place we can never reach to scratch...and I just checked with control....the implants are working....the women have arrived in Machico.”
“Good...go back to control and help monitor the trackers and send in my two assistants.”
The para-medic left the room and immediately two burly men with sidearms strode into the room. They stood before Esperanzo.”
“As I advised you earlier....your mission is to continue following these women...but under no circumstances are you to apprehend them.....we allowed them to escape as a means to complete our true objective...do you understand?”
“Yes sir....shall we leave now....we were in control and were told the subjects are in Machico.”
“Yes....but remember these women are intelligence agents....they will be alert to any anomalies...do not lose them, but do not alert them to your presence...is that clear.”
“Yes sir,” nodded the men.
After the two men left the library, Esperanzo wandered to a large window overlooking the sea and mused to himself. “Ever closer we become....and I will complete what Declan Quinn was unable to....ever closer now......”
