What Michael saw, was a slender, young woman with blond hair and light blue eyes. It was obviously that she was mad. Her face was red and her eyes fuming. If looks could kill, Michael would be dead by now. But he just stood there with his hands behind his back, looking at her cautiously.

NIKITA: “Didn’t your mother tell you that it’s not decent to eaves dropping on others?”

MICHAEL: “No, she didn’t. My grandmother did.”
The statement was made in a very serious tone, still sounded funny enough to evoke a snort from the young lady.

NIKITA: “And who might you be?”

“I’m Michael Samuelle, pleased to meet you, Miss Jones.” He reached out for her hand and touched the back of her fingers lightly with his lips. He didn’t see the need to pretend not knowing her.

Surprised that he knew her name and face, she asked: “Are you a relative of my father?”

“No, I’m not. But we have some sort of a business agreement.” Michael answered.

Then Phillip cut in with: “Good, I see you two have met. That’s wonderful. Now we can proceed with the subject we were discussing a few minutes ago.

Michael tensed a little and tried to goad Phillip in a different direction: ”I don’t think this is the appropriate way, nor time to start …”

Phillip cut him of with the remark that he’d already told her. While Nikita was looking at them and listening, her anger started to boil up again.

“I can’t believe this! Don’t tell me that you’re the one my father wants me to put up with?”

Michael simply stood there looking at her, eyes expressionless. And Phillip watched the interaction with great interest, wondering how this would unfold.

“So it’s true. Tell me, how did my father manage to get you all the way to England? With what promise did he lure you out here? It must be the company, isn’t it?”

Still Michael didn’t say one word. He stood there, hands behind his back, studying the woman and starting to like what he was seeing. But Nikita went on…

“Isn’t there anything anyone wouldn’t do for money? You truly believe that I’ll let you use me in whatever way you like? Tell me, Mr. Samuelle, just how long have you been here already?”

“Please call me Michael.”

“Okay Michael, but can you answer my question, please?”
“A little more than four months.”

Phillip: “Michael has been a guest here since his arrival. He’s been working for the company from the first day he came. I need his advice with certain issues concerning improvements around the company. So, I thought it practical for every one involved, that he should stay here. And that the two of you could get to know each other more closely.”

“Well, four months, and already so much trust towards each other. I’m amazed to see how much you’ve accomplished in so little time, Michael. Something I haven’t been able to in years! But maybe it’s because I’m a woman and you’re a man?” Bitterness was clear in her voice.

Phillip: “Please Nikita, let’s not start this again, shall we? I’m trying to accomplish something that requires your consent as well.”

“You must be taking me for a fool, father. Why would I comply with this ridiculous plan of yours? I can take care of myself perfectly well. I don’t need a guardian.”

At this point, Michael decided to cut in. They were not willing to give in to the other, not even for his sake.

“Please Phillip; your daughter has just arrived from abroad after being away for years. She needs to get reacquainted with her family and surroundings. She needs time to develop a certain routine in her life now and to think about what she’d want to do now that she’s returned home.
I really believe that it would be better to wait for a while and give Miss Jones the time to think about the future of the company, which may be of some concern to her own future life, or not. These issues need some careful consideration from all of us, so I suggest we all take some time to think it over.”

Phillip was the first to comply, and reluctantly Nikita did so too. Then a servant came in to announce that the table was set and that dinner was served.
Immediately Nikita declined, saying that she was going out to visit her mother and hurried away.

As Phillip and Michael were walking to the dining-room, Michael said to him:”You should take it easy for the sake of yourself. Try not to rush things; it won’t do any good to any of us. You don’t need this kind of anxiety. Take time to get to know her again. Give yourself this chance. What do you have to loose?”

“I know you’re right, Michael. But my time is limited. She may find it hard to believe, but I sincerely care for her and really want to see her settled before I leave this world. I don’t care much about the company anymore. If she doesn’t want it, I trust you to make the best of arrangements for her benefit. I don’t want her to end up like her mother.”

“I see. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure she’s settled.”

Nikita went to her mother, who lived at the other side of the town. Arriving there, the noise of a blaring transistor indicated that her mother was home, but not in the right mind set to give her a proper welcome. After all, she’d been away for years. She’d also sent her mother a message of her home coming.

She walked up to the apartment door and knocked. She had to repeat that several times and a little harder before the door was opened. The smell coming out of the apartment nearly made her puke. But the sight of her mother did even worse. She was disgusted, ashamed and disappointed. Not that she expected much of a welcome, but this was terrible.

In her childhood, she never paid close attention to her mother’s way of living. But while away, living with different kind’s of people, she did experienced a little with stuff. Then things got out of hand, even went very bad with one of the girls named Jenna. That one took things way too far and became an addict. In the end she took her own life. At that, Nikita had decided she’d seen enough. It was time to come straight and stopped smoking.

Now, with her mother standing in front of her, suddenly many things became very clear.
Nikita had come here to find some understanding and support. But she was the one who understood that there was nothing to find here.

Her mother, in fact, was in danger of her own weakness. She could end up the same way as Jenna. Nikita felt very sorry for her mother, entering the apartment saying: “Hello mother”.

Roberta looked at the young woman intently, as if trying to remember where she’d seen her before.
It had been years when she’d last seen her. She was not quite shore it was the same girl. This one was taller and looked like an adult. But there was something familiar in her face. Looking closer, Roberta decided it was truly her daughter who came to visit her.

“Nikita! I don’t even recognize you anymore. My god, you look different.”

“Yes, I grew up, mother.”

“Sit down, child. Care for a drink? There’s not much in the house, only liquor.”

Looking for a place to sit, Nikita declined the drink: “No, I don’t want anything, please don’t bother. How are you?”

“Look at me, Nikita. What do you see? If that father of yours hadn’t cut off my allowance, I would have been much better…blah blah blah.”

Sitting there, listening with mild fatigue, she let her mind wander about the plans of her father. Somehow, understanding was becoming clear about why her parents were not together. They’d been to busy with themselves, still were. She’d been something of minor importance that had to be dealt with. No mother-daughter conversation here. Time to go home…
