The next day, Michael went to work as usual. But today he couldn’t even concentrate on the simplest tasks. Distracted with thoughts of Nikita, Michael paced the length of his office, then circling his desk and then to the window to stare in the distance. Thinking about their future, he knew that for him there were only two options.

If Nikita chose to marry him, he would stay here and take care of his family and run the company as best as possible. This is what he hoped to happen.

But, if she refused to marry him, than he certainly wasn’t going to remain in this country. He than would arrange an agreement with some other company to take over, set up a trust fund or settlement for Nikita. After having arranged his businesses, he would leave to France with his grandmother. There he wanted to set up a vineyard.

The last time he was in France with his grandmother, they’d seen a beautiful house, located a few kilometers from a small village. The land surrounding the house was plenty enough to serve his purpose. There was even space for his grandmother to create a garden with flowers.

If only he could convince Nikita. He really liked the young woman. She was hurt, as far as he could tell. Her father was failing to see what she really wanted from him. But than, maybe he knew and simply wasn’t able to show it.

Phillip was at home in bed. The excitement the previous day had caused a set back and worsened his condition. Michael advised him to tell his daughter; after all, she had the right to know. But Phillip wouldn’t allow it. With such a great distance between them, he wouldn’t know how to deal with all the anxiety she certainly would pour out on him, maybe even smothering him in it. The only thing he wanted was to see her save, well cared for.

There was one other thing he requested. He wanted to see Adrian before he died. She may become another ally in the camp and succeed in where he has failed. So the message was sent to Canada.

******

Nikita had left the house to visit some friends. She hadn’t seen her father all day. Did not make an effort to know where he was either, thinking that he was at the company.

******

At dinner time, only Michael and Nikita were present.
Trying to have a conversation going, Michael asked about her mother.

“How is your mother? Is she well?”

“Do you know her?”

“I have seen her a few months ago, yes. Why?”

“Than you know what you’re asking. There’s nothing new to tell. She may be even worse now than a few months ago.”

“Was she happy to see you?”

“Happy?” She snorted. “I don’t know. She hardly recognized me, and when she decided I was her daughter, I had to listen to every complaint she could come up with since I left years ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What for? It isn’t your fault. So, where is my father?”

Michael looked at her, surprised that she didn’t know he was home. He hesitated a moment, not sure what to say exactly, then answered: “He didn’t feel to well, so he went to bed.” and waited.

She looked up, when he didn’t offer more information. “Well, what’s wrong with him?”

Sighing, he looked straight at her and said: “Why don’t you go to him and talk with him?”

“Alright, I will.”

So she did later that evening, but he’d taken something to sleep and was not in a condition to talk. Maybe some other time than.

*****

The morning after, Michael and Jones, both went to work at the company early in the morning. Nikita slept late. After her breakfast, she went to visit with a friend, but this time it was Terry alone. But she couldn’t enjoy the fun for real. Her near future was constantly on her mind. What would her friend say when she heard about Michael?

She had to admit that he was handsome and a gentleman all the way, not in an exaggerating manner, but as if it was his true nature. He wasn’t obtrusive, kept the proper distance. But that he took side with her father raised her resistance.

She was shore her friends would fall for him, all over him and more. She couldn’t care less. But decided not to bring up that topic as yet. First she had to be shore which direction to take…

That day, she came home after dinner time, to avoid tension. But her father was waiting for her.
She joined him in the study, took a seat and waited.

Phillip: “You’ve visited your mother. How is she?”

“You shore you want to know?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“By way of interest, Nikita. Nothing else. Have you thought about my proposition yet?”

“Yes, I am thinking, but I haven’t come to a conclusion yet.”

“I see. Well, take your time.”

End of discussion. He wasn’t really interested in her mother, since he didn’t gave her an opportunity to answer the question, Nikita thought. Or is it because she questioned his motives?

******

Nikita paid a visit to the company a few days later. Arriving there, unexpected, she walked to the entrance and introduced herself at the front desk. Upon hearing her name, the desk clerk immediately took her upstairs to her father’s office.

Once there, she saw him in conversation with a blond man with a pair of glasses on. She cleared her throat to get their attention. Both men looked up, and both their faces lightened up.

“Hello father.”

“Nikita, it’s nice of you to pay us a visit. May I introduce you to a senior employee, Jurgen Pruisen? He’s been with this company for fifteen years at least.”

“Hello Mr. Pruisen, nice to meet you. I’m Nikita.”

“The pleasure‘s all mine Nikita, all mine. But please call me Jurgen. It’s the first time we have the pleasure to welcome you in the building. May I offer you a round tour?”

“That would be very nice, Jurgen. I’ll see you later, father.”

“All right, I’ll be here when you’re finished.”

They started the tour at the top floor and gradually went downstairs. When they passed Michael’s office they knocked, but no one was in, so they proceeded with the tour.

Jurgen knew Michael lived with the Jones family, but didn’t mention it.
Nikita was aware of Jurgen knowing it, but kept on talking to avoid questions. But she needn’t worry. Jurgen was not at all interested in Michael.

Michael was busy in the stair ways of the fire exit, so he didn’t know Nikita was visiting.
By the time the tour was finished, he appeared at the end of the hallway from the office floor. From there he saw the two engaged in a lively discussion in front of Jurgen’s office, and Michael felt disappointed. Regretting the lost opportunity to have spent time with her.

He walks up to them, acknowledges Jurgen, nods his head to Nikita and says: ”It’s nice to see you here, Miss Jones. Have you seen the place already?”

This little encounter was tensed. Jurgen retreated to a distant silence, lifted an eyebrow when he heard Michael address Nikita in a formal way.
Nikita could feel the tension between the two men and also lifted an eyebrow at Michael’s attitude.
She answers: “Jurgen gave me the grand tour, we’ve just finished, Michael. We mist you at your office.”

“I had some work to do in the fire exits, but I’m clear now. If there’s anything you need to know, I’m in my office.”

“That’s good. See you later.”

Michael left the two, went straight to his office, wondering if he didn’t make a stupid fool of himself just then. What would she think?

Maybe half an hour later, she went to Michael. After a brief knock, she entered.
“So this is your kingdom. It’s nice, but sparse though.”

“You think?”

“Yes, I thought it would be more furnished, like my father’s.”

“Did I give you that impression?”

“No, not really. But with your background, I thought that you would live up to it.”

“I see. Well, most people seem to get it wrong with their first impression of me.”
Michael was pleased that, at least, she was trying to see what kind of person he was. He’d have to wait to see if it meant anything.

“And why is that, Michael?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re not great with words, are you? How do you manage to explain yourself during staff meetings?”

“Maybe I’m more accustomed with that kind of vocabulary.”

“I see. I’ve noticed some resistance to your plans of improvements around here. I admit that what I’ve seen doesn’t really look old. But than, I’ve no knowledge of what should be, since it’s my first time here. You know, talking about hard ware isn’t that fascinating for a girl. So, I’ll leave it to you gentlemen to discuss the problems.”

“Than it’s not likely you’ll be involved in the business in the future?”

“Clearly not. And before you ask, a marriage is not the solution I’m thinking of. I don’t know what my father and you are conspiring, but I decide what my life will be in the future.”

“Of course. It’s your legal right to do what ever you want with your life.”

“Good, I’m glad we both agree to that. Now that we’ve cleared things between us, I would like to leave, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course not. I’ll walk you to the car.”

And she left. Leaving a disappointed man staring at the disappearing car.

Nikita went to see Terry again. Once there she asked Terry if she knew about arranged marriages. Then Terry told her that their father in Zamunda was discussing with the local royals for a wedding between Carla and the prince. It was custom in some countries in Africa. It is done for the benefit of both families.
Nikita asked about the girls entering such a marriage, if they even had anything to say in this matter.
Terry answered that it depended on how the parents were thinking about that themselves. Sometimes a girl could be lucky if the parents were interested in her well being. But if not, she was just sold of to the highest bidder.
In this case with Carla, it was the latter. And because Carla was such an obedient girl, she was chosen to be the bride. Terry had put up a huge fight to escape to this fate.
Then Nikita decided to tell Terry about the plans of her father and Michael. Maybe she should consider herself lucky to having a say in this matter, but she wasn’t pleased with it.
Terry asked if the man was handsome. Nikita said that in a certain way he was, but you have to get to know him first.
