Another day later.
Michael went to the office as usual. But there was nothing usual with the appointment he had later in the afternoon. Without Phillip knowing, Michael had done some digging in the past years of the company. The traces he’d found worried him terribly. That’s what Michael’s thoughts were about all morning. How did he get in to this? One day he had closed off a certain period in his life, and the next he finds himself in the middle of a great deal of trouble similar to the ones he’d survived months ago.
***

Nikita and Adrian would stay at home to watch over Phillip. Later in the afternoon, Nikita would visit her mother to tell her about the illness of her father. Maybe she already knew, maybe she didn’t. She wondered if her mother even cared. Or would she be worried about the monthly payments to stop if Phillip should die?

She was sitting in the living room as Adrian entered and joined her. Adrian felt sorry for the young woman. She truly understood her pain.
That the girl’s father would confide in strangers, to the girl, or even put more trust in them then in her, was something that came down hard to deal with. The denial was crushing her emotionally.

Adrian : ”I know this is hard for you to accept, Nikita. But try to understand a man who has had many problems to deal with and no one to talk to. Many depended on him but couldn’t give much support in return.
Your father is a very responsible man, always putting his duties before anything. He may not have very much understanding of the emotional needs of his family, but he always cared about you being fed, clothed and having somewhere to live or giving you the best education possible.
Even now, he’s worried most about what has to become of you. His only concern is to make sure you’re settled and protected. That’s the only reason he keeps hanging on to life.
But I’m afraid that with all the abominable developments of late, he must feel like his world is crashing around him.
He may be awake right now. Why don’t you go to him?”

“Yes, I’ll go to him. Thank you, Adrian.”

And so she went to his room to see him. Entering the room, she spoke softly to him, not to startle him. He seemed awake, but his head was not quit clear.
Nikita felt heavy at heart. She wanted to tell him she was sorry. But the man in bed looked so much older, pale and vulnerable, hardly recognizable from the strong headed, opposing character she knew he was.

Heaving a sigh, she left the room quietly. She went up to her room to prepare herself for a visit to her mother.

******

Somewhere else in town, Michael could hardly believe what he was reading. The letters in his hands were very incriminating for one of Jones’ important employees.
Michael didn’t see the informant.
The club he went to was very similar to the one Nikita had visited when she saw her mother using drugs.
At the bar, he’d ordered a drink he didn’t finish, because the bartender had passed him an envelope from a customer that had just left.

Then Michael left the club, called a taxi (or carriage) and told the man to ride around for half an hour. He opened the envelope and started to read the nasty story, with the image of a dying Phillip in the back of his mind.

Michael had a suspicion for some time ago. But just like Phillip, he couldn’t find the evidence to take some sort of action against. And now he had plenty of evidence to work with. But would he tell Phillip about his findings? And how would the girl react to this information? And what about Jurgen himself?

Michael folded the letters back in the envelope and told the driver to bring him to the office. After he arrived there, he noticed that Jurgen was not present.
‘Then we’ll just have to wait till the man is back’ he thought.

******

The other side of the town.

Jurgen and Roberta were having a terrible fight. He was going to end their relationship for good. She was of no use to him anymore.

“I’m sick and tired of your complaining all the time. Look at you! You’re nothing but a drug addict and a drunk. There’s no fun being with you anymore.”

“So you’re going to throw me away like a piece of trash? After all I’ve done for you? Robbing my own husband? I thought you cared for me, loved me…”

“There was a time I thought I did. But things’ changed. I met someone else…”

“What are you saying; you’re leaving me for another woman? Who is she?”

“It’s not important who she is. I just want to have a better chance in life and with her I’m shore that my chances will improve.”

“And you think that I’ll just sit here and let you get away that easy? To push me aside for some young trollop?”

“What do you mean by that, Roberta?”

At this point, Nikita was entering the hallway that led to the front door and could hear her mother shouting. The other voice she didn’t recognize as yet, but slowing down her paces she listened to what was said between the two people.

“What do you mean by that, Roberta?”

“It’s not so difficult, you know. You mess with me; I do the same to you.”

“Really? And what do you think to do about it?”

“I can always tell Phillip what you did to his company through the years, can’t I?”

“Are you threatening me, Roberta?” His voice became dangerously low.

Nikita was standing just outside the front door listening. The moment she recognized the male voice, her skin crawled with goose-bumps. Apparently he knew her mother. And what was she saying about Jurgen and her father’s company? What was going on here?
She stood there like frozen and kept listening.

“Oh, now I’ve got your attention, have I? What do you think, Jurgen. My life is partly ruined because of you. I listened to you when you asked me to steal from my husband. I did it because I loved you. Thinking that you returned my affections for you. After all these years, now you’re kicking me aside like a dog. I won’t let you, you hear me! I won’t.”

“I really don’t think you have any choice in this matter. I do as I please. You are worthless. And don’t even think you can come in my way. Nobody cares about someone like you, Roberta. You better think about that if you decide to doublecross me…”

At this point, Nikita decided to leave, to return home, before someone saw her standing there.

“And what would you do if I do go to Phillip?”

“I don’t think you want to know, Roberta. I mean it. I have many friends who would like to do me a favor. So, don’t ever call me or bother me again.” He started to leave and she screamed and cursed:

“You #$^&.#..I hope you rot in hell, you @3%$#….”

******

Jurgen did not return back to the company where Michael was waiting for him. After closing time, Michael went home, deeply in thought of the course of action to take. But first of all, his decisions would depend on how Phillip was doing right now. How much could the old man take?

******

Nikita retreated in her steps to visit her mother and went straight home, up to her room to think. She was deeply disappointed once again in the people she thought were trustworthy. Now she once again understood her father’s meanings with her. How can you protect yourself when you can’t make a good judgement of the people around you? How would I know when someone wants to take advantage of me? What has to become of me?

She knew the answer, but would she be willing to accept it?
