The next day.
Nikita decided to stay in bed and take things easy. The strain she’d felt the past week, had subsided some. But in stead came the feeling of loss and loneliness. A slight knock on the door announced Adrian coming in with a servant carrying a tray with some breakfast for Nikita.

“Good morning, my dear. Have you slept well?”

“Yes I have. I didn’t expect to but I feel some what rested.”

“That’s fine. I had put some herbal spices in the tea for you to sleep. You needed that.”

“Thank you for being so considerate. I think I’m staying in bed today, I don’t feel like doing anything right now.”

“You do that, dear, there’s no need to rush, is there?”

“If you have some more of that tea, I’d be glad for some later.”

“Of course I have and I’ll bring you a cup later. You take it easy now.”

After Adrian left, Nikita started thinking. There was this issue nagging on in her head. Need she to broach this subject with Michael and when? It was not possible that Michael had any part in their misfortune. Or was she on for another disappointment in men? Maybe she should go on a cruise for a month or two. To a country were it’s warm and with a white beach and palms along side. Anyhow she needed some space to think of the future. How will she proceed?

******

Two days later, the day that the notary arranged for them to read Phillip’s last will.
The people involved were Adrian, Roberta, Michael and Nikita. Roberta would receive a monthly income of three times her present alimentation. Therefore she could pay all of her expenses, including the monthly costs.
Phillip named Adrian as the guardian of Nikita until her twenty-first birthday. But she would receive a monthly allowance, enough to make a reasonable living on her own. At the age of twenty-one she’ll have full responsibility of her inheritance and also manage her mother’s finances.
Out of gratitude and highly appreciation, Michael received a small sum of a few thousand pounds to help him with his vineyard, Phillip decided.
The rest of his legacy was for Nikita, who couldn’t refrain from crying softly all the time. Even now she was still wondering if her father had done the right thing. Was she truly free to make her own choices? One could feel free with so much money, but did she?

Roberta was very pleased with this turn of events. Her daughter was a rich woman now so it’s time to show some affection towards the only family member she had left. “Nikita darling, you can live with me now that we’re both left behind. We can help each other go through the sorrow of loosing a beloved one.”

“I really think that it won’t do both of us any good, mother. I need some time to be alone, to think. When Michael and Adrian leave to France, I’ll go on a trip to Italy.”

The following days after her announcement were quiet ones for Nikita and Adrian. Nikita stayed at home, mostly to avoid the attention around the loss of Phillip.

One day she got a telephone call from Lillian Viscano. Lillian wanted to know about the relationship between Nikita and Chandler, how serious they were. Nikita told her that at this moment she wasn’t sure about anything as yet. There were other matters for her to settle first before she would have time to evaluate her relation to Chandler.
But Nikita wanted to know why Lillian was asking her that and she almost threw up when she heard what Lillian had to say.

Lillian was more than three months pregnant with Alec Chandler’s baby. That was the reason of the fight they had on the funeral of Nikita’s father. Chandler wasn’t even considering taking any responsibility for the baby. She wanted Nikita to know what kind of man Chandler was before it was too late.
She was sorry for Nikita that the situation had turned so bad but she didn’t have an other choice than to tell her.
But Nikita was grateful for the information and thanked Lillian for sharing it. That at least made it easier to decide a course of action. Action?

Nikita became more reserved and quiet and Adrian was very worried of this development.
Even the phone calls of Chandler remained unanswered. But she was also avoiding the attention of a certain male guest in her house by taking long walks through the country around the estate.

In the meantime Michael was still useful in establishing the transition with Chandler’s company, but it was on part-time base. The rest of his spare time he used to get information on the vineyard they’d bought in France. The former owner would leave the place in short term so Michael could take over from him.
It was high time to put his future life together. It would be nice to experience the last harvest of the grapes, if there was anything to harvest at all, and help with the preparations for the winter. The house in its original state was very old and needed some restoration. It had a little tower and a bow-window and cellars. He thought it a very nice place to raise a family. It was just a pity that he couldn’t bring his supposed bride to be along with him. It would have made the prospect of moving into his new home even more appealing.
He was certain she would love the place, the peaceful environment and maybe even find what she was looking for; a purpose in life.
Right now he needed to find a way to talk to her alone. She was avoiding him and he wanted to know why.

Adrian received a message about her house in Canada. There were some tradesmen interested in the property. Before it was sold, she wanted to remove some pieces of furniture belonging to her family, and shipped them to France. So Adrian was leaving sooner than planned but Michael would stay some more days. Sure he would find an opportunity to talk with Nikita.

And soon it came. That day he’d just gone to the harbor to book a passage on the boat to Canada for Adrian and a passage for himself to France. When he returned, he saw her walking on a path through the meadow and immediately he turned to her direction. She seemed preoccupied and wasn’t aware that he was nearing until he was just a few feet away.
She turned around and looked at him: “hello Michael, you’re back so soon”.

“Yes, it didn’t take long what I had to do. I think we need to talk, Nikita.”

“Yes, I think so too. There’s something that’s been troubling me for some time now, and I want it resolved.”

“Sure, what is it?’

“Do you remember what happened at the funeral reception?”

“What exactly are you referring to? Many things happened.”

“After the scene with Lillian and Alex, she pushed past me and left. When you went to the bathroom to see to Alex, Jurgen came to me and said that what happened to the company was not ill fated. He insinuated that you were no innocent in that matter. What did he mean, Michael?”

“You think that I had part in the downfall of the company? That’s why you’ve been avoiding me?”

“I’m so confused, Michael. I don’t know who to trust anymore.”

“Alright, if you come with me, I have something to show you. I’ve had it for some time because I didn’t know if I should burden your father with it, considering his condition. But he can’t be harmed anymore, so I think you should have it.”

Silently they returned to the house. After entering in, Michael went upstairs to retrieve the package, while Nikita stepped into the living room and waited for Michael to return.
When he did, he handed her the envelope he’d received months ago and said: “I’ll be leaving tomorrow so I won’t burden you any longer with my presence. I hope that what’s in the envelope answers all your questions. I’m sorry of all that has happened, Nikita.”
And he left to go upstairs to gather all his belongings and prepare for the journey.

Nikita went to her father’s study and opened the package to see what was in it.
