Alone in her late father’s office, staring at the envelope on the desk, Nikita didn’t know if she wanted to reveal the contents of it. Sometimes it’s better not to know, because the burden or responsibility of knowing could be hard to accept or deal with.
But she needed clarity in her life before she could move on, or she’d keep questioning every one’s loyalty or trust. What part did everyone play in the misfortune of her late father’s company?
She opened the envelope and scattered the contents out on the desk. There were notes scribbled down on several peaces of paper, a roadmap that had been used many years ago, a time schedule for delivery and some pictures.
The pictures were the first she took a look at, a good look. The first one was from Roberta and Jurgen together in an embarrassing position. Another one showed Chandler and Jurgen together in the same environment as the first picture, but Jurgen had a different suit.
The pictures were faded of old age, but from the fashion of the clothes one could conclude in which period of time they were taken. From a time that her life hadn’t been a happy one, not that she had a happy life at present, but it surely was better than before.
Looking at the pictures again, she really felt ashamed of her mother’s behavior. To think that at one time she even liked Jurgen. The man was contemptible; and still is.
Another picture showed some men unloading a truck into another truck. One of the trucks’s seemed to be one of the company they’d owned and now was Chandler’s. The other one had no sign on it. But it wasn’t hard to imagine what was going on.
She couldn’t recognize any of the men in the picture, only maybe one man who stood with his back to the photographer. He seemed familiar.
Searching through the paperwork on the desk she found a note that indeed shed some light in this mess.
The note said that a former truck driver was forced to work together with Jurgen to let Chandler and co steal the truckloads before delivery. The driver had a family to think of. They made sure to threaten his son’s safety. So Jurgen changed his schedules at the very last minute and provide him of a different road direction. Things got too risky when two other drivers disappeared without a trace.
Phillip Jones became the main suspect so the insurance company didn’t count for the loss of the delivery. Jones was forced to change course of action in the matter of transport.
Meanwhile, Jurgen made sure that Roger, the truck driver, got the advice to keep a low profile until the matter was solved. Roger received an amount of cash to be able to hide from the federals, and maybe from Chandler’s men, so he thought. But Chandler had kept a tail on him.
After a while when the matter had been filed away as not solved, Roger got an unexpected visitor. Just in time when he was badly in need of a job. And so he found himself recruited to work for Chandler and co all though it was a legal job this time.
Why did he give Michael the information? Chandler’s position at the moment is untouchable. No one in his right mind would dare to do anything. He hoped that Michael was wise enough to realize what he was getting in to and stop before he got himself into a great deal of troubles.
Michael was alright, but for Jones’s company it was far too late. In all this misery her father had no one to turn to for support or even sympathy.
His family hadn't been like a family at all, didn’t even care one bit. He must have gotten sick just then. He had to send her away to keep a clear head in dealing with all of this and her mother.
Nikita felt miserable.
Her father had been a man tough to deal with, not one to show his feelings. But she certainly didn’t think he'd deserved all that. He'd been a good man, taking responsibility for his own decisions and more.
She felt miserable with grief, lonely and she cried with remorse.
It was near dinnertime and she was still in the office. She truly didn’t feel like having company right now, so she excused herself with the others and saying that she didn’t feel too well.
Adrian and Michael didn’t mind under the circumstances. Nikita still had many issues to deal with. They didn’t want to leave her behind like this. They’d offered her to go with them, but she said that it was time to start on her own. Knowing how stubborn she can be, they didn’t force the issue.
After dinner Adrian went looking for Nikita. She was still busy in the office. Adrian noticed the red eyes and face and knew that she’d been crying. “You know you can still come with us, Nikita. We would love to have you with us; it’s no problem at all.”
“It’s really nice of you to be so concerned, but I do have to find my own way, Adrian. I want to try, can’t you see?”
“I understand. I just hate to leave you behind like this. But if you’re sure that this is what you want than I have to respect your decision. But please, When ever you need us, please come to us. Do you promise me that?”
“Yes, I promise I will. Thank you Adrian.”
After Adrian left, Nikita stayed in the office for several hours longer.
The impact of the evidence that Michael had given her was damaging for her self esteem in some way. She’d offered herself on a platter.
What did she know about men like Chandler and Jurgen? They must have girls like her for breakfast! Had she been making a really big fool of herself to let them almost take advantage of her so easily? Had Lillian been such an easy target as well? How come they didn’t teach you to deal with things like this in boarding school?
These kinds of problems of course were on a way different level. To handle those properly, you need people around like Adrian and Michael and her father, if he were still alive.
Thinking about Michael; why had she questioned his loyalty? That was another huge error in judgment on her part. Will she ever learn?
