Chapter 2
Michael turned as he heard the jeep coming up the road. Manuel wasn’t due to return for another two weeks at least.
“I wonder why he’s coming,” Michael thought, checking his watch. He hoped that there wasn’t some emergency in the village.
Taking a moment to rest while the jeep made its way down the rutted track, Michael slipped the pack from his shoulders and leaned it against a tree. Wiping the sweat from his forehead with the shoulder of his tee shirt, Michael propped his foot on a rock and leaned on his raised knee to wait for his friend.
The jeep was mud spattered, and Michael realized that the roads must have been horrific after the deluge from the night before. His heart hitched a bit wondering again what would make Manuel undertake such a journey after a storm like this.
“Hola, amigo,” Michael said, raising a hand in greeting as the jeep’s motor went silent.
“Miguel!” Manuel shouted, his face split by his usual wide smile.
“He doesn’t look worried,” Michael thought, the concern lifting a little.
“What’s up, my friend?” Michael asked in Spanish.
Manuel stepped down from the jeep, embracing Michael.
“A man is looking for you,” he answered in heavily accented English.
“What man?” Michael asked, his brow furrowing.
“From what I can tell, mi amigo, a very powerful man. He wants you in New York, muy pronto. He wants to pay you… a lot,” Manuel said, his eyes shining with greed.
Michael laughed. He wondered if Manuel would start actually rubbing his hands together.
“Who is this man?” Michael asked, uninterested in traveling to New York for anyone.
“His name is Nicholas Wirth, Miguel. His man said that he was going to pay you one million U.S. dollars to undertake his project,” Manuel stated, growing visibly excited.
Michael was shocked into a reaction. “Wirth?!” he said aloud in surprise. “What would the financier want with me,” he thought.
“So let’s go, my friend,” Manuel stated, heading for the jeep. “The Amazon will still be here when you return.”
Michael didn’t move. He had given up society and the twenty first century, preferring the company of the simple native tribes of South America. Still, his curiosity was piqued. What would a multi-millionaire want with a man like Michael Samuelle? After a few more minutes of reflection, Michael climbed into the jeep. There was only one way to find out.
