The morning fog had thinned considerably but the light rain was still falling, glistening off the wet cobblestones on the main street of Tende. Michael eased the Mercedes through the intersection joining highway 204 heading south to Nice and Monaco. He glanced over at Nikita and slipped his hand over hers as she sat with her hands clasped on her lap.

“I know you are a good driver Nikita, but if you don’t mind I would prefer to drive through the mountains until we reach the Riviera.”

She looked at Michael, pushing his hand back to the steering wheel. “I know, you want the rush of pushing this car around the tight turns in zero visibility on a wet road....I understand totally Michael.”

“What? No, I realize you want to try driving this car too...it’s just....”

Nikita laughed. “Teasing you Michael...I’ll wait my turn, then just wait until I drive along the coast.”

As they entered the Maritime Alps, the road narrowed and became very winding. Nikita’s comment about zero visibility and wet driving conditions was accurate. A low cloud cover blanketed the road and the surrounding mountains. Michael gripped the wheel tightly, his eyes riveted on the narrow strip of road. Nikita had managed to purchase a cd at a kiosk in Tende and the sounds of Chopin drifted through the six Bose speakers in the Mercedes. Nikita glanced at Michael.

“The music okay, or would you prefer to just concentrate in silence?”

“No, I like the music...or if you want to talk.”

“Later when the visibility improves...let’s just let Chopin take us over the mountains.”

Michael nodded; the highway was now totally enveloped in cloud and the rain began to streak down in a torrent. The windshield wipers fought to dispel the flood of water battering the windscreen. Michael slowed the Mercedes as the car began to hydroplane on the rain soaked road. Nikita watched Michael intently; glancing back and forth to the sliver of road ahead. Suddenly the wail of sirens and a flashing blue light appeared behind them. Michael’s eyes darted from the rear view mirror to the road ahead as he attempted to pull the car over to allow an ambulance to pass. A white blur and blue flashing lights of the ambulance shot by them and disappeared into the cloud ahead. Michael steered the Mercedes carefully onto the road and after two kilometers, they reached the sight of the automobile accident. The ambulance attendants raced around three vehicles, attempting to administer assistance. Michael pulled the Mercedes over and switched on the emergency blinkers. Nikita looked at him, biting her lower lip.

“Do we really want to offer our help, Michael?”

“There are more people injured than the attendants can deal with....but I do realize the hazard of presenting ourselves as first aid attendants and exposing our presence to....the parties we are hiding from.”

“Perhaps we can offer assistance....then disappear as good Samaritans before anyone can delve into who we are.”

“Yes....we should try to help. Come.”

They exited their car and darted over to the accident site. Michael spoke in french to an attendant who pointed to an overturned camper van. Nikita and Michael ran to the van and as Michael leaned to look inside, he spotted a woman and two children pinned under debris from the van. Michael pried open the sliding door, enough for Nikita to slip inside. She quickly checked the woman’s pulse and nodded to Michael that the unconscious woman was still alive. Next, she checked both children who were sobbing hysterically. Nikita attempted to calm the children and checked them for any injuries. Finding none, she gently pushed them towards the narrow opening in the sliding door, as Michael pulled them outside and carried them to the ambulance. He returned to the overturned van just as Nikita was attempting to support the now conscious woman through the narrow opening.

“She has a broken arm and leg, Michael. If we can splint it somehow, we can remove her without causing more trauma.”

Michael nodded and raced back to the ambulance; he looked inside, and retrieved emergency splints. Nikita and Michael placed the splints on the woman’s leg and arm, then as Michael pulled the woman through the opening, Nikita gently held the broken leg and arm until the woman was free of the vehicle. They placed her on the rain soaked road and Nikita raced over to the attendants to ask for a stretcher. After Michael and Nikita placed the woman in the ambulance, the children began crying and trying to comfort the woman. She smiled weakly at Nikita, and reached up with her good arm to touch her.

“Merci.....merci beaucoup!”

Michael’s eyes flashed at Nikita as she turned and smiled at the woman. “You will be fine....the breaks are clean.”

“Please...I must thank you properly....who are you...please.”

Michael touched Nikita’s shoulder as she smiled at the woman. “Fellow travelers...we were glad to help.”

Nikita and Michael quickly walked away from the ambulance as an attendant raced over to administer to the woman. They jumped into the Mercedes and Michael carefully steered around the accident site and into the mist and cloud encasing the mountains and road.
