Michael and Nikita drove along the French coastline from Montpellier towards Narbonne. The day was cold and grey. Michael steered the Mercedes over the wet road and turned to glance at Nikita as she dozed in the passenger seat. A steady rain began to stream down the windshield as Michael adjusted the wipers for more water dispersal. He stretched forward to switch the stereo cd to play another selection. Sarah McLachlan’s Mirrorball echoed through the speakers. Michael smiled in acknowledgment of Nikita’s favourite singer.
Nikita stirred and pulled herself upright in the seat.
“Sorry Nikita...I didn’t mean to wake you with the music,” whispered Michael.
“Awwww....no problem....you like this singer?”
“She is your favourite, right?”
Nikita smiled, “ One of them, yes.” She squinted through the torrents of rain now pounding the window. “Wow, it’s really raining.....if you get tired, I can do a stretch of driving.”
“Yes, fine. I originally thought we would drive across the Pyrenees mountains through France but with the colder weather, we should go south into Spain, then across to Portugal.”
“Hummm...the mountains would have been beautiful, but I can see your point.” Nikita sighed and stretched her arms. She reached over and stroked Michael’s thigh. “Michael.”
“Yes.”
“Will they ever stop looking for us? I mean, surely MI-6 and Interpol will realize we are no threat to them. There are far more important people to hunt than us.”
“We can’t take that chance Nikita. I feel there are more people in play than Declan Quinn and a few unknown faces at Interpol. The tactics they have demonstrated illustrate we are a threat to their plans.”
“But what are their plans? I mean...why would they think we could disrupt some personal money laundering they are doing.”
“When we settle in Portugal, my contact will hopefully aid us in finding out.”
“Why would your contact care? I know you told me he owes you his life....but...well....”
“He is a mercenary supplier....a businessman....if there is money to be made, he will be interested.”
“Will we live at his complex?”
“Until we locate our own villa....possibly only a matter of a few weeks. We need to find a location that will protect our identities....and of course, one conducive with our needs.”
Nikita grinned. “Hummmmm....so we’re setting up house together....living with one another...like a couple.”
Michael stared ahead at the curtain of rain pounding the windscreen. “Ahh...yes. You should be the one to chose the decor of the house....I seem to recall you liked decorating.”
Nikita attempted to suppress a snigger. “Yes, it has been one of my pastimes....knocking out walls and painting.” She paused. “It’s....it’s just a little hard to visualize us as a couple....I mean....we are sort of a couple now....but, you know, doing ordinary things...like making and eating breakfast together, doing laundry, gardening....like a married couple.”
Michael inhaled deeply. “Yes...it will be strange...but the experience should be pleasant enough.”
Nikita laughed. “Michael....Michael....you are so....you! It will be nice to sleep in the same bed every night....with you at my side.”
Michael bit his lower lip and swallowed while continuing to peer through the streaming rain as it pounded the Mercedes.
