Given her age, I decided to not do the invasive tests on her. Anesthesia can cause the condition's degeneration to speed up and I wanted her to have this last summer to toodle about in the grass and slap kisses on the grandbabies.

I first started hearing her scuff a toenail on the carpet last spring. Unfortunately, it was right around the same time as Dave dropping his big news on me.

China's condition steadily go worse over the winter, and I was so glad for her sake when the snow & ice melted. Still thruogh the summer, she was able to get up and down the stairs to the dog yard and I could let her out onto the grass from there. These stairs are built closer together than "normal" stairs are, and I had them built that way specifically to accomodate senior dogs. She hasn't been able to get up and down the normal stairs to the grass in over 6 months.

This condition causes them to lose muscle tone, and she has been losing weight for probably the last two months. Her front still wants to try to get her around, but I can see in these last few weeks that she is also losing muscle tone there now, too. If they live long enough with this, their rear eventually becomes paralyzed, and then their front becomes paralyzed too. They can suffer from organ paralysis, and lose bladder & bowel control.

Our biggest enemies right now are the stairs and the weather. It won't be long before we freeze every night, and we're not that far away from our first snow. I fear waiting a day too long with her, and know that I have to do what is right for my baby girl. It's just so hard when there is nothing mentally wrong with her...in her mind, she is still very spry.
