I think Long John and Purity should have gotten married at some point, but I guess that would turn the entire story upsidedown wouldn't it?

Yeah, that was kind of a sub-premise of the show--Purity chasing Long John around. If she finally caught him, it'd be like Ricky finally making Lucy the star of his show on "I Love Lucy"--the whole show would change.
