Subject: Jamaica Inn trivia Author: Susan [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 02:42:00 03/07/07 Wed OK, you know I'm watching Jamaica Inn way too often cuz I'm beginning to notice the most quadrivial details. (My pressing question at the moment is not directly related to Robert Newton, but I figured this could serve as a topic for other questions related to the movie, unlike the existing topics for comparing the book and the movie or the different versions of the movie): We all know that that Harry's outfit is a bit unusual (he's definitely got the weirdest costume in the film; it looks like he's wearing a Freddy Kruger striped sweater underneath a jacket with the sleeves half torn off, plus a pair of spats, plus the top hat, plus all his clothes look way too small for him, and looking at his size, it's hard to imagine he gained a lot of weight after he went for his fitting; you can barely see him when he turns sideways!). So has anybody figured out what that black thing he's wearing on his left wrist is? I haven't been able to zoom in on a good clear shot of it yet since it's most covered by his sleeve, but from the glimpses I've caught, it looks like either some kind of bowling or archery brace or Emlyn Williams forgot to remove his wristwatch (in every scene). Also, just an observation: Has anybody else caught the continuity error in the scene where Jem first appears--Dandy has tattoos all over his chest in most scenes, but in the shot where they're all standing together ... surprise, Edwin Greenwood didn't really have "Annie Dandy 1815" tattooed on his chest! Given the time period I would assume that it's for archery. However, I know what you mean by the possibility of it being a wristwatch because at times it gleams in the light but I think it's the buckles picking up the light. There was a good shot of it when they were being lowered, on the rope, into the cave. You could see the straps sticking out then. And speaking of leather bands, have you ever noticed that Bob wears one in Busman's Honeymoon on his right wrist? I've wondered what it was used for because the film was in a more modern time period from Jamaica Inn so an archery brace would not have been appropriate daily wear(unless the character was into archery but that was never explained). Could it have had something to do with him being a handyman? Maybe a protective band for tools hitting the wrist (like a hammer or saw..just guessing)? Or did they wear them for shooting a gun? I was trying to remember in which scene I had caught a nice clear shot of it, and I found two semi-decent ones, but you found the best one of all. After I posed the question, I vaguely recalled seeing him in another movie with a black band that was definitely a watch; I finally remembered it was "The Stars Look Down"--in which he plays a loathsome character almost identical to Dennis in "Hatter's Castle," except that he rather satisfyingly meets his match in Robert Newton. I hated both characters at first (Dennis and Brodie), but, once I got used to them, I really began to appreciate the duelling villains! (Curiously, both novels--"The Stars Look Down" and "Hatter's Castle"--were written by A. J. Cronin, but Dennis is much more sympathetic in the novel, nothing like the conniver he is in the movie. But in the two movies, it's as if the producers had just seen Emlyn Williams in "Stars" and rewrote the script for HC so he could reprise the role.) But when I checked "The Stars Look Down," it was definitely a wristwatch, with a much thinner band than whatever that thing he has on in JI is (looks like it has two buckles). (Were big, wide watchbands ever fashionable before the 1970s? Anyway, if that was a watchband, then that would be another goof since I don't think the wristwatch was invented yet in 1819.) BTW, I think those quick glimpses of the space between the buckles is what I keep thinking might be a watchface, but in that three-on-a-rope scene--a rather ridiculous visual, but that's getting off the point--it's quite clear that there are two separate buckles. If you've got a screencap of the one from "Busman," I'll be glad to add it to the "Mysteries" gallery! :-) (Boy, are we overanalyzing things or what? Yes, I know I started it!
