Subject: Robert Newton in "Pirates" magazine

The spring issue of "Pirates" magazine containing the article I wrote about Robert Newton is finally out on newsstands. One place I know of where you can find it is Barnes & Noble. (Or visit their website, www.piratesmagazine.com.) It includes my article (kind of a reworking of the web bio with some added information regarding "Treasure Island" and that "arr" thing), plus lots of glossy photos that haven't appeared on the site yet (some of them full-page!), plus some exclusive photos contributed by Kim Newton. With the editor's introduction, the entire article runs 10 pages. And, as an added bonus, another photo of RN is used to illustrate Jean-Michel Cousteau's article about pirates and their parrots! (I haven't had time to read through the whole thing yet, but I just wanted to alert the fandom before they're all gone!)

I went to B&N last night and got my copy. I haven't read the whole article yet, but it certainly is quite a spread. Susan, that was a real tribute to you too. It was really your article. I will probably get to read it tonight but it was kind of late when I got home.
Congratulations!

YAY FOR SUSAN!
Are they're any pictures of him, or do I have to wait and find out for myself?

I'm going to, but the only problem is that the closest B&N is about an hour drive away.
I'll check at Wal-Mart.
Are you sure that B&N is the only place that selld it?

The site below says Pirates Magazine is also sold at Borders & Walden Books. It's possible that it is old information. I have my doubts that Wal-Mart would have the magazine.

You could always order it from the Pirate website. But you may have to subscribe to the mazagine for a year..I'm not sure about that. I don't remember if it offered the option of just getting one magazine.

NO! that'd take too long, I want it now!
I'm going over to B&N today after work and getting my own copy!
I can't wait to see what it looks like.
I know it won't be a let down, Susan put it together.

"I know it won't be a let down, Susan put it together."

Aww, thanks. :-) Actually, I didn't put the whole thing together; I donated some of the photos and wrote the main part of the article, but the editor and layout people did the design and intro and typesetting and all that. So seeing the finished product was a pleasant surprise even for me. It looks really nice! Hope you'll get a chance to pick up a copy soon. (Just think of those nice full-page photos on heavy gloss paper!)

OK, I feel very left out here. I’ve staggered through three Banes & Nobles, a Borders and a Bookstar (why so many bookstores start with a “B” is a question for some other chatboard) -- and no one here has “Pirate Magazine.” Although the chain may carry it, I’m told that individual bookstores are not required to do so.

Apparently the so-called “historic” magazines -- meaning those obsessed with WWII, the wild west, and the Civil War, are stocked on the shelves with the “men’s magazines.” But even there, amid the Maxims (very ah, historic those) and the numerous journals about how to appreciate good cigars or stereo equipment, no pirates were to be found. It isn’t like I live in a small town, or a small state, or a third world country. I live in California….

Bottom line, and let this serve as a warning for anyone else on the same quest. Pirates may indeed be lurking out there, but it might not be easy to find them…

I work at a bookstore that carries it, it's called Brinks. Do you have one anywhere around you?

I know, it's not that easy to find; it's a new magazine that just started out last summer. Try contacting them through the website (www.piratesmagazine.com) and asking if they know what store in your area carries it--or whether you might be able to buy just that issue. Wish I could be of more help; I only got one spare copy from them myself or, believe me, I'd be spreading them around! (If I had the money, I'd go down to my local B&N and buy out all their copies and send them out to Robert Newton fans!)

I'll tell you what, Steve, if you want, e-mail me your address and I'll mail you a copy if you're comfortable giving it to me. I'll be glad too, it's no problem or trouble.
