Ahoy, shipmates! Alert reader and Robert Newton fan Jim Morgan (any relation?) alerted me to Dave Barry's September 8 column, in which September 19 is declared an official holiday. (Soon it'll be as big as Thanksgiving!) For a hearty chuckle, get the full story here:

<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/columnists/dave_barry/4018055.htm">http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/columnists/dave_barry/4018055.htm</a>

Barry doesn't acknowledge that Robert Newton was the true inventor (with a little help from Robert Louis Stevenson, of course) and popularizer of what we now think of as pirate talk, but *we* know it'll really be Talk Like *Robert Newton* Day, right, mateys? Hope you'll join the festivities! Arrr!

Arr, mateys! Here's hopin' ye all parleyed wi' yer shipmates as befits proper ladies 'n' gentlemen o' fortune yesterday ...

Looks like the day is catching on. Even NPR did a quick segment during All Things Considered about the new holiday after seeing Dave Barry's column. You can hear their interview with its creator John Baur on the NPR website if you have RealPlayer. Here is the link:

<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://search.npr.org/cf/cmn/segment_display.cfm?segID=150311">http://search.npr.org/cf/cmn/segment_display.cfm?segID=150311</a>

I'm not sure if that's a "dynamic" webpage though (see all the valuable terminology I learned in that web-design course I took over the summer?), so in case the link doesn't work, you can just go to www.npr.org and search on yesterday's segment called "Pirate Talk."

Unfortunately, they still don't seem aware that Robert Newton is responsible for the way movie pirates talk today, especially the "Arrr"-word, which he listed as one of the five most important words to have in your vocabulary for the occasion. And I don't see a discussion topic on that segment either where we can post the info. Arr, I says we fires e-mails at 'em atill they hoist their flag o' truce. What say ye?

(BTW, my pirate name was "Mad Bess Rackham"--what's yours?)

There's tons of information about him on this website--go to www.robertnewton.net for the main site.

In what way are you related to him?
