Last night, my favorite late-night host, Craig Ferguson, spent his entire opening monologue on the subject of pirates. While he didn't acknowledge Robert Newton by name, he spent a lot of time invoking those beloved speech patterns, rambling on about Blackbeard, Long John Silver, Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson, parrots, wooden legs ... and just where that accent comes from. (The inhabitants of Somerset sound a lot more like Hagrid than Robert Newton to me though!) Anyway, the whole thing was absolutely hilarious, as always.
