Dear folks

It has been interesting to revisit the site, after a bit of a gap, and go over the later messages, one thing that comes to mind is that the subject, RN, certainly invites some lively debate, and that is true not only for the people writing on the boards here, but also of the people who knew him, worked with him, directed him, or have written about him "gifted but flawed" according to the director and writer Bryan Forbes.
Maybe, maybe not, but it's an opinion.

Having been a big fan of Robert Newton over slightly more than 30 years, and having spent a lot of time reading about him and watching his films, I was surprised and delighted to come across this site, and I think all of us would agree that it is a fantastic piece of work which, from my personal point of view, has opened up a world of information and photographs that I had never before had access to.

I think Susan deserves a great deal of thanks and credit for constructing and adding and maintaining the site for the benefit of people like me, who lack the information / research sources, time, and dedication, to say nothing of the technical ability to do something like this.

One of the great things about sites like this is that everyone can participate and give their opinions, it seems that all are united in their praise of Robert Newton, while there are differing views as to interpretation, meaning, and so on, also quality of performances from film to film.

Unfortunately we can't ask Mr Newton for his views but if we could I am sure he would be frank and forthright
and not award himself top marks in everything he did.

Michael Caine has said more than once that one of his films was so dreadful that he has never seen it, however, he went on to say that he had seen the house that it paid for, and that it is a very good house indeed.

And the late Wifrid Hyde-White had a very individual opinion on directors...................

"Such useful fellows - they take your coat from you in the morning, and hand it back you at the end of the afternoon"

Mr Spielberg might disagree !

Anyway, the point is that there are many opinions on different points, but the good thing about it is that we have this terrific forum that Susan has provided in which to air the views !!! Thanks !!!

Best to all
Tim S

Well put Tim. I think we are all on this website because we admire and like Robert Newton. And I am sure that Susan created the website so that she could share some of the extensive research that she has done over the years with all of us who didn't have the time, knowledge, etc (as you said, Tim). Opinions are opinions and that does not mean that everyone has to agree. I believe we all have our favorite movies and characters that he played and we like them for our own personal reasons. Everyone does not have the same taste (and it's a good thing that we don't!! that's what makes the world go round!).

Thanks, you guys. You're absolutely right that the reason I do this is to share with all of you, and I feel inspired that it has brought together so many people from all over the world with a common interest in Robert Newton (and, I hope, will continue to do so), even if we may differ in our individual opinions. As you say, Sue, that's what makes the world go round.

BTW, Tim: Was that Michael Caine movie "The Island" by any chance?

Hi Tim,

I certainly agree with you. I've searched high and low for information regarding Robert Newton and his memorable films. This site contains the most comprehensive collection of information, pictures, etc. I love coming here to see what else Susan has in store for us. Also, the discussions are most interesting.
