Subject: More role playing

Speaking of biopics (and dead horses?), there's a movie about the life of Keith Moon in the works ... and a rumor going around that Mike Myers is being considered for the role! Of course, whoever accepts the role will have to evoke some aspects of Robert Newton. Should be interesting. What's your opinion?

As for roles we wish Robert Newton could have played (why didn't I think of this?)--I brought the Harry Potter video to our latest family gathering, and my dad, seeing it for the first time, said he was disappointed in the characterization of Hagrid ... He should have been more "over the top"--he needed Robert Newton to give him some charisma, he said! What do you think? Would Robert Newton have made a great Hagrid? (Or how about Mike Myers impersonating Keith Moon impersonating Robert Newton as Hagrid?! ;-))

Discuss!

Susan,

I think RN would be better served by playing a defense of the dark arts teacher. Hagrid is too stupid a character for RN to play.

Now that you mention it, I do see a similarity with how Hagrid's dialog (in the HP films and HP books) correlate a little to RN's LJS character to an extent. :)

Sheilah, from what a couple of people have told me (I haven't read the books yet), Hagrid gets stupider as the series goes on. But in the early books/films, I think he's sympathetic and colorful enough to be worthy of RN's portraying him. Besides, RN was a talented enough actor to play any kind of character, from evil genius Dr. Clive Riordan to the simple-minded Bill Sikes in "Soldiers Three" (not to be confused with Bill Sykes in "Oliver Twist"). Like Tricia, I hear definite similarities between Robbie Coltrane's vocal intonations and Robert Newton's. Is Hagrid supposed to have a West Country accent?

So which Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher do you think he would be best suited to play?

It's been a couple of years since I read Goblet
of Fire, but I think he might be good as Mad-Eye Moody.
