I have recently seen his amazing performance in David Lean's Oliver Twist, so being only 16, I am relatively new to Robert Newton's abilities. Every actor in that film was perfect, but his portrayal of Bill Sykes was quite brilliant. I'm now going to look into other films with him in, just to see if that performance was a one-off. I also like The Who, Keith Moon especially, so I'll be looking out for any similarities there were between them closely now!

you are very lucky indeed, you have so many varied roles to look forward to,for instance his pirate roles were so good he literally defined the way a pirate would act in the future, what more can i say,i just hope you can get access to his movies,my childhood in the 50's and 60's was enhanced just by watching him in action

Welcome to the "club", Calleja! I was barely aware of Robert Newton before Susan created her great site. I've seen 20 movies and several LJS episodes in the last 18 months, and I'm looking forward to discovering more of his great performances.

Welcome, Calleja! Glad to hear you've discovered RN and his great performance in OT! Oliver Twist was the second Robert Newton film I ever saw.

If you're a Keith Moon fan, definitely check out Treasure Island--and his other LJS portrayals. When I first saw TI before I'd ever heard of Robert Newton, there were moments when I thought maybe that really *was* Moonie up on the screen! I didn't find out till 25 years later when reading Tony Fletcher's bio that it wasn't just in my imagination.

Sykes and Silver seem pretty similar to me compared to most of his other roles, except, of course, that LJS has a heart--and more charm. Although I'm not sure RN was capable of playing a role without *any* charm! He had a magic touch.

BTW, I just learned something interesting: I remembered reading a long time ago that Long John Silver was based on a real-life friend of Robert Louis Stevenson and had been wracking my brain trying to remember who it was. Turns out it was William Ernest Henley ... author of that poem that's been getting so much media attention this week, "Invictus."

Please let us know what you think of RN's other films, Calleja! Happy viewing!
