noted for his partiality to a dram or two, robert newton once went on a dinner-time session with the great british character actor wilfred lawson.
they were both appearing in richard III at the time.
the duo fell out of a London pub mid-afternoon, at which point newton exclaimed: "Good God Wilfred, we've got a matinee."
they found their way back to the theatre and newton shambled on stage as John of Gaunt, reportedly saying to the audience: "If you think I'm pissed, wait till you see the Duke of York."
