Hello

New ideas for your poll. Or perhaps the chatboard would like to start a discussion on these themes?

How about Bobbies' most subtle role? I.e., His most restrained performance?
For us: They Flew Alone, This Happy Breed.

In which film he is most handsome?
For Ilsa: Ooh! Night Boat to Dublin, or Vessel of Wrath, or Odd Man Out, or They Flew Alone...

In what film is his voice at its most mellifluous?
Odd Man Out, Vessel of Wrath (think of the courtroom scene!)Obsession...

Which film displays the most range? I.e., where Bob gets to display his talent the most!
This Happy Breed, Hatter's Castle

Which role is the most challenging or complex for Bobbie?
James Brodie, Bill Sikes, Bill Walker...

We both admire the work of Bob, but Ilsa is the one who appreciates him the most! Each film has its own merits and we like so many of them - so much!! Our favourite films are Odd Man Out and Henry V - ooh and They Flew Alone and Night Boat to Dublin and Vessel of Wrath and Major Barbara...

Let's see now! This will be tough, but challenging. Of course this list is only his movies that I have seen. I hope to see more some day:

Subtle role: I like Obsession and The Flew Alone

Handsome: Really cute in Major Barbara (loved him wearing the cap), and again Obsession and They Flew Alone

Voice: Obsession (can you tell I'm a little obsessed with this film!!), then I was impressed with him in Hatters Castle (he could really snarl in a low-key voice)

Range: Odd Man Out, Waterfront, Hatters Castle

Challenging: Lukey, James Brodie, Bill Sikes, Peter McCabe

I would like to add another category 'Overall Appealing' and I am going to list the TV presentation of 'The Baker of Barnbury'- this has become another favorite of mine. It's just a sweet Christmas story and he is just charming in it.

Thanks for the ideas. There are some good questions there. I've used one of them to update the poll, if you want to cast your votes!

Here are my answers (hope you don't mind a few Long John Silvers slipping in):

* Most subtle/restrained performance: This Happy Breed, Tom Brown's Schooldays, The Squeaker, Jamaica Inn, Fire Over England

* Handsomest: Night Boat to Dublin, Vessel of Wrath, Green Cockatoo, The Squeaker, They Flew Alone, Busman's Honeymoon, Major Barbara ... I'm also partial to his grungy look in Treasure Island and Oliver Twist.

* Most mellifluous: Androcles and the Lion, Major Barbara, Treasure Island, Baker of Barnbury, Henry V, Poison Pen, Busman's Honeymoon, Odd Man Out

* Most range: Waterfront, Obsession, Treasure Island, Tom Brown's Schooldays, Desert Rats

* Most challenging/complex: Desert Rats, Tom Brown's Schooldays, Oliver Twist, Treasure Island

(I know his performance in Treasure Island isn't considered by many people to be subtle, but considering the role had never been played quite the way he did it and that he managed to make Robert Louis Stevenson's villain even more beguiling and likable, I'd have to say that Long John Silver in Treasure Island was a challenging and complex role to play. To illustrate how much his interpretation has become a part of our culture, I just saw the Topsy Turvy, a movie about how Gilbert & Sullivan wrote the Mikado, and there was a reference to the Pirates of Penzance, prompting actor Timothy Spall to do a brief, anachronistic Robert Newton impression!)

* Overall most appealing: Long John Silver, Baker of Barnbury, Desert Rats ...

It's so hard to pick one or even just a few roles for each category. So many of his performances are a combination of all those things and more!
