In reply to: Andy 's message, "Tony Hancock" on 16:02:36 07/07/01 Sat

On the contrary, Tony Hancock is mentioned, on the page listing RN's imitators: "That chop-licking, eye-rolling, Jim-ladding growl remapped pirate argot forever, and achieved extra immortality in the repertoire of a dozen comics from Tony Hancock to Eric Morecambe." In fact, I did the Google search as you recommended, and my site came up first on the list!

I have to admit that I was not familiar with Tony Hancock (or Eric Morecambe) until I was made aware of that Financial Times article. Alas, as far as I know, we've never gotten his show here in the U.S., or at least in the town where I live. (Looks like it was pre-PBS.) However, I'll keep a (rolling) eye out for it.

But perhaps I should elaborate further on it or include a link. This looks like a good candidate:

What do you think? Do you know of a better one?

But it's hard for me to comment when I've never seen/heard his impersonation myself. (I'd sure love to hear him play Hamlet as Long John Silver!) If you (or anyone else) would like to contribute a description for the site, it would be more than welcome, and I'll give you credit for it.

For that matter, does anyone have more information about Eric Morcambe?

This link might help, you can hear the Newton Long John Silver creeping out.

Harr! Thanks for sharing that! I loved it! I'll be sure to link to it on the site, just as soon as I get a chance to do some updating.

BTW, I see by one of those Web pages that Tony Hancock was in a film I just added to my must-see list after my pal at Cinephilia told me that it featured Dudley Moore and Peter Cook: The Wrong Box. Now that you've forced me to look into it further, I see that the cast also includes such greats as Peter Sellers, John Mills, Ralph Richardson, Leonard Rossiter ... And Tony Hancock's name is ahead of Sellers's and larger than Cook's and Moore's. Not only that, but it's based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson! Reading the plot synopsis, I'll bet this is where the producers of Survivor and The Weakest Link got their inspiration! What do you think? Check it out here:

How could I have been unaware of this movie for so long?! It sounds like a hidden classic!
