The China Daily, citing unidentified sources, said Premier Wen Jiabao was involved in the decision to use the conventional rail system. The Communist Party newspaper People's Daily also reported the decision. Officials made the decision at a Jan. 7 meeting of the State Council, the country's Cabinet, according to the China Daily. Besides cost, "the maglev technique was excluded because it does not match the wheel-track technique used by railways in China," the report said, citing Wang Derong, vice-chairman of the China Transport Association. The Railways Ministry had no immediate public comment and did not answer its telephone Friday morning. At least one newspaper, the Beijing Morning Post, said the decision to abandon the maglev plan had not been finalized. The scrapping of the 9-year-old maglev project -- two weeks after the country's first maglev, a short stretch in Shanghai, began regular operation -- represents a setback for the development of the technology in China, which many had seen as one of its key markets. It also appears to open the market for other alternatives on the proposed Beijing-Shanghai line. Other options for the railway, according to state media, include styling it after the Shinkansen, Japan's high-speed bullet train, or two methods used in France -- TGV and Inter-City Express. The Shanghai maglev is German-built. The online edition of People's Daily said the decision was part of a larger plan for the nation's railways passed by the Cabinet. "There have been many versions of the rail and maglev dispute, but an end has been put on them by the passage of the medium-and-long term plan," People's Daily said. "This is indeed the end of decade-long feasibility studies." Leaders envision a high-speed railway network for China that includes four north-south lines and four east-west lines, the government says. Such a network would help move hundreds of millions of Chinese who increasingly are traveling around their own country -- and, more important, help transport goods and raw materials. China began daily runs of the world's first commercially operated maglev in Shanghai on Jan. 1, but the $1.2 billion German-built system spans only 18 miles. It connects Shanghai to its 3-year-old airport, the city's second. The Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway Project was first proposed in 1997. The cost of the 750-mile railway has been estimated at $14 billion. The maglev cost can be as high as $36 million to $48 million per half mile, twice that of wheel-track lines, the China Daily said. I rose to the challenge and went to your reference and found only one reference to Tesla, and that was to his invention of alternating current (in wires, I presume). Granted, Tesla did do some work in broadcasting energy, but this reference does not address it. BTW, this history of technology ranks among the most cynical writing that I have seen: and I consider myself to be extremely cynical myself! ------- In response: Tesla was brilliant, but often went off the deep end. Broadcasting energy in three dimensions is horribly inefficient (the available energy diminishes as a cubic function). Today we are able to "beam" energy, but it then becomes unavailable to any but "point" receivers. To get it to myriad end users requires transponding a myriad of times, with each transponding creating another inefficiency. How is this better than wires? I've read the ITC concept description on your web site, and consider it to have many viable (but not new) elements -- and many elements that are highly questionable. It is not yet well enough developed to warrant anything but idle curiosity. How may I contact the "ITC Advocacy group in Washington State"? I am actively involved in transportation planning in Washington and have no knowledge of such an organization other than the King County Monorail organization -- which I have the utmost regard for. Keep up the good work, dreaming is important, but I don't think that you are quite ready for prime time. Before you present a proposal to decision makers, get some meat on your ideas' bones. My own system is not ready, until I find enough money to build a test system something like Skyweb Express or Ultra has done. The federal govt is about to pour in about $300 million to provide a TRAIN link to the airport, mostly using existing tracks. They think they are going to charge $20 one way, and get passengers (this almost 2 hrs pay for a lot of the workers). Ha Ha. The bus, streetcar, and subway costs the city about $500 million per year in subsidies, and the major expressway needs so much repair (about $3 billion, I think) that there has been some talk about demolishing it. See http://www.et3.com . ET3 will go twice as fast as the Concorde supersonic airliner and can switch at full speed because the switch is in the vehicle, not the track. With essentially no air drag the propulsion energy used is very small compared to all other transport modes. It is also makes no noise, is totally all weather capable, environmentally friendly, and won't bump into birds, animals or people. I personally think that the people in charge of anything are always reluctant to approve something that might make them obsolete. Any manager or otherwise that adopts something new knows the same about it on opening day as his lowest employee. This makes him very easy to replace. I remember some of the mistakes made when computers were new. We were looking into using computers to help do some of the work involved with Air Traffic Control. Nobody in the govt service knew anything about computers, so we had to call on IBM to look at what problems it could help us with. This meant that some of the staff had to be assigned to IBM for training. Maybe the boss should have gone too, because he now had some employees that could talk about computers, and he didn't have a clue what they were talking about. You can see how this put him in a difficult position, which he would have avoided, if he could, by finding a reason to cancell tthe project. Fortunately he wasn't high enough up the ladder to do this. Later, in many businesses, it was the people with computer training who moved rapidly to management positions. The same will probably happen with the systems we are pluging. Answer: There are issues like use of right of ways, routes, many details, all of which require a contract. The contract will state that the ITC is funding the construction of it. Likewise, the Seattle ITC Loop will NOT be privately owned, which requires a contract. Question: What would Seattle need to do to accept the ITC offer? Answer: Agreement on issues of mutual interest to both parties. Question: If the mayor told you to start, when would you be ready to start construction? Answer: The Mayor has no such authority without the council. If the City Council agreed, and discussions lead to a mutually acceptable contract, construction could start shortly thereafter. Question: If the mayor asked you for additional specific information, would you send it to him? Answer: Indeed. Question: What about if a city councilman asked, or a representative of a neighborhood council for an area that your proposed system will pass through? Answer: Likewise. Why wouldn't we? Question: Or is it that you'll have more information available at some point, but you're not ready to share it yet? Answer: No secrets from our end. Check out our website. It's all there. Date Posted: 19:56:01 01/11/04 Sun Over 100 years ago, in the waning days of the Robber Barons, the copper companies did what they did for profit as they had a right to do. They represented their own interests and potential profits against what was then a new and unknown technology such as Tesla's demonstration to transmit electricity without wires. See: [http://www.democracynature.org/dn/vol4/raptis_technology.htm]. 100 years ago, the robber barons ruled almost supreme whereas, today politicians and administrators control the introduction of new systems or choosing between two competing old systems. Our elected officials have a duty to examine this new magnetic system of transportation which is not in the same state of just theoretical development as was Tesla's at the time of the conflict with the copper companies. The ITC is clearly in a more advanced state waiting for a practical application. All of the ITC system components exist and are not theoretical in nature. While special interest groups have vested interests to resist the building and implementation of a magnetic railway, elected, appointed and contracted officials, who represent or work for the local governments, have a duty to make a peace with competing special interests and their supporters such as those who favor a Monorail system and those who favor a Light Rail system. They have an obligation and duty to work out the feasibility of implementing a trial magnetic Rail system at no public expense. The ITC Advocacy group in Washington State feels that men and women with courage need to act in the region's best interest by examining the ITC proposal for a Magnetic System before $4.5 Billion is spent to build a light rail system that is obsolete before ground breaks. The ITC Advocacy group in Washington State understands numerous benefits to a high speed transit MAGLEV system (i.e - in excess of 200 MPH), one of which is that it would become feasible for a company like Boeing, Microsoft, other key industries in the Washington State "urban" centers without having to worry about not finding sufficient labor when skilled labor can be transported daily to and from the Puget Sound area (and elsewhere - perhaps from Spokane or the Tri Cities) with little impact to increasing meaningful congestion either in the Puget Sound area where the roads are congested. Congestion would be relieved in the urban areas if sufficient labor, who use existing freeways in today's business climate, would not use the same roads that they use today to work in the inner cities.
