It is extremely important to hold auditions. If not, students will not be happy. At least this way you are giving everyone their fair chance. I would also suggest keeping an open mind. Sometimes you should give solos to someone that never gets them even though you had a person in mind. It could make all the difference to them.

After re-reading the posts on this topic, I thought of another point... Is it more important to give the solo to the person who performs it BEST or is it more important to share the educational opportunity by giving it to different people each time??

I think Nickie, that the solos should NOT be given to the same two people each time. Let other students share in the joy of musical expression. By letting other students perform the solos, maybe you will inspire a student to become a better musician!
