I have never thought about a teachers' union for music educators. I've never been posed with the question and never had a reason to think about it. With that being said, my mother teaches in the Toledo Public Schools as a speech pathologist. She belongs to the TFT (Toledo Federation of Teachers). Therefore, I assume that larger (inner city) school districts have their own union, but that still doesn't answer the questions of what's best for a MUSIC educator or what's best for someone teaching in a small, rural community. If anyone else has information on this topic, I am interested in it also.

I think my cooperating teacher was in a local chapter of NEA. His sole reason for that was to be provided with a lawyer if something bad happened. However, sometimes MENC and OMEA can intervene at the school district levels (if you're paid less than the football coach because he does more work than you). I think the difference between NEA and AFT is a little like the difference between the NFL and the AFL. I too, am looking for more info about unions.
