I think you should be on the rite track. My answer is the same as yours. But I think we did the calculation of the width of segment differently.
I used : [(1.8-1.2)/2] +[(2.75-1.8)/2]= 0.3+0.475=0.775

I think the reason why we used formula of rectangle (dept*width)to apply on these trapezium segment is because the difference is not that great when applying on real life situation. Maybe difference by millimetres only. I think it also helps to make calculations easier for us.
