Date Posted: 14:37:58 07/04/04 Sun Huumakot ng awards ang Magnifico pero Inay vested others for best actress. Yehey! ------------------------ By RICKY L. CALDERON TODAY Columnist Talented young actor Jiro Manio, the lead star of Magnifico and Diamond Star Maricel Soriano, the female lead of Filipinas, were named best actor and best actress respectively, at the 22nd Annual Film Academy of the Philippines Awards night held on Saturday night at the CCP Main Theater. Both were first-time winners in the FAP. Jiro’s victory makes him the youngest best actor winner at the FAP, beating acting heavyweights Christopher de Leon and Richard Gomez. “First time ko dito sa FAP at best actor po ako. Salamat po,” the talented young actor said in his speech. He dedicated his award to God and also to his father. “Kung hindi po dahil sa kanya, wala po ako dito.” Jiro missed scoring a grandslam. He was named best actor at the Star, famas and Urian. His only loss came at the Golden Screen Awards that named Albert Martinez best actor for Magnifico although Jiro was also nominated. Maricel, who also won the best actress award at the Metro Manila Film Festival for Filipinas, dedicated her award to God. She also thanked her director Joel Lamangan, his costars in the movie and its producer Viva Films. Magnifico, the touching story of a young boy who inspired the people around him, won the best picture award and the best director trophy for Maryo J. delos Reyes. It was a grandslam for Violett Films of Madame Violet Sevilla, as Magnifico won all the best picture awards in the recently concluded awards season. Likewise, Maryo J. also scored a grandslam as he won all the best director trophies from the various award giving bodies for the multiawarded film He earlier won at the Star, famas, Golden Screen Awards, and Urian for Magnifico. Veteran actress Gloria Romero was named best supporting actress for Magnifico while Eric Quizon picked up the best supporting actor trophy for Crying Ladies. Both were not around to accept their awards. Magnifico also won for Michiko Yamamoto the award for best screenplay, her fifth, but she was not around to accept her trophy. Lutgardo Labad won the award for best musical score, also for Magnifico. Other winners were Albert Michael Idioma (best sound engineering for Malikmata, Vito Cajili (best editing for Malikmata), Rodell Cruz (best production design for Mano Po 2), and JA Tadena (best cinematography for Mano Po 2). In glittering rites that attempted to approximate the glitz and glamor of the Oscars, the stars were brought to the Red Carpet aboard luxury cars such as BMWs and Jaguars. Among the earliest to arrive at the Philippine Plaza Romblon Room (where the stars are supposed to assemble) were Eddie Garcia and Victor Neri. The walk of fame on the red carpet started at around 3 p.m. as the stars were brought in batches aboard cars.. The awards night was hosted by Pops Fernandez and Ogie Alcasid. Musical numbers were provided by Kuh Ledesma, Regine Velasquez, Vina Morales, the Southborder and Jay-R. Actor-director Leo Martinez, Director General of the FAP, was very pleased with the conduct of the awards night. “We have set a standard on how awards night are supposed to be put up,” said Leo. The Lifetime Achievement Awardee was director Augusto Buenaventura, the favorite director of former President Joseph Estrada. Buenaventura was not around to accept his award. This was accepted on his behalf by Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, who came with Sen. Bong Revilla at the awards night. --------------------------------- 'Magnifico' FAP's best Posted: 11:55 PM (Manila Time) | Jul. 04, 2004 By Alex Y. Vergara Inquirer News Service "MAGNIFICO" scored a grand slam when it won five of the 12 awards at stake, including best picture and best director, at the 22nd annual Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) awards held Saturday night at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. "This is our seventh award," said Delos Reyes in a mix of Filipino and English, "still, I can't help but feel nervous since it comes from peers in the industry. The film has won 50 awards so far from all over the world... Expectations are high and more challenges lie ahead, but I'm excited at the possibility of doing more films which makes me proud as a Filipino." Child star Jiro Manio, who played the title role, bested such industry veterans as Christopher de Leon and Richard Gomez for best actor. He later shared the stage with best actress winner Maricel Soriano, who starred in "Filipinas." Best supporting actor Eric Quizon ("Crying Ladies") and best supporting actress Gloria Romero ("Magnifico") were no-shows. Veteran film director and lifetime achievement awardee Eddie Romero made an appeal to government to support the ailing film industry. He lamented the fact that the industry, which was once the leader in Southeast Asia, has been left behind by its regional counterparts because of onerous taxes and disunity in its ranks. The evening's other big winners were: Lutgardo Labad, best musical score, "Magnifico;" Albert Michael Idioma, best sound engineering, "Malikmata;" Vito Cajili, best film editing, "Malikmata;" Rodell Cruz, best production design, "Mano Po 2;" and Jay Tadena, best cinematography, "Mano Po 2." Produced by actor Albert Martinez, the FAP ceremony, the shortest in recent memory, lasted a little over two hours. From the CCP, the party shifted to the nearby PICC Forum for the first ever director general's ball. Attempts to copy Hollywood's annual Oscars were evident early on as stars-the men dressed in tuxedoes and barongs, the women in Filipiniana-inspired gowns-alighted from borrowed Jaguars and BMWs and walked the red carpet while waving at excited fans. Some of the women also sparkled in chunky jewelry pieces loaned by Bulgari. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
