At our school we have a slabbed patio area which has proved to be the ideal place to work on our numeracy skills. We count in ones, on one row, tens on another, we can step or even jump on them. They can be coloured with chalk in the beginning but you will soon find that the child does not need this extra visual technique for long. We also use this movement when learning tables, it takes away the need for remembering the sequence of where they are. It just works, believe me and have fun trying.
