Almost always children with learning disabilities, especially those with dyslexia have very poor self-esteem. Teaching the child will be easier if the child's self-confidence is boosted. Find out her strengths (most often art/drawing/sport) and give her lots of praise when she does something well(you must mean it.... not false praise). You need to be patient as she may have had years of low self-esteem, but make sure that you are firm but fair.
Try teaching in small steps...dyslexics' brain works differently to that of others. The following book may give you an insight in to how different their learning styles can be
The Gift of Dyslexia: Why Some of the Smartest People Can't Read.
Use kinaesthetic method (using hands on experience) as well as visual, auditory (listening) and oral teaching methods. ACE Spelling Dictionary is an excellent book (cheaper at Amazon.co.uk or at Tesco online bookstore) to help with spelling.
It is always worthwhile helping a child with special needs, just to make them believe that they are better than they thought they were at first. So, Good Luck.
